Which Yakuza games I should play in order to get into the story?

I understand there is what 0, Kiwami, 6 and apparently 7 is coming out. I tried to read it from wikipedia, but didnt quite understand it. Thanks!
EDIT also is it neceassary to play every Yakuza game before 6? I like how the 6 looks, but don’t have time to play every single one.

Story order of Yakuza games [Spoiler free, please]

Hello guys!
I didn't like this game series before, but I've just seen a trailer for Yakuza 0. I want to give it a chance. I don't want to google it, because I don't want to see spoilers. Has Yakuza good story? Is "Yakuza 0" chronologically first? Thank you!

Please excuse my bad english, if I've written something wrong.

Yakuza Remastered Play Order?

Recently came across the Yakuza series on GamePass. Wondering if the remastered (4,5,6) is worth playing if I didn't play the OGs (1,2,3)?
UPDATE: Thank you so much for your responses, just downloaded Yakuza 0, can't wait to start playing

[PS4] Single Player, Story Driven games?

Some of my favorite games are God of War, Horizon Zero Dawn. Ghost of Tsushima, Nier Automata, What Remains of Edith Finch, and The Tomb Raider and Mass Effect trilogies. I’m a casual fan of the huge open world games like the newer Assassin’s Creed games, but I really dislike their lack of a cohesive narrative. RDR2 is a little intimidating for me as there is a million things to do. I enjoy games that are direct, have a great story and don’t require a thousand side quests.
Also, I don’t necessarily enjoy the default hard mode games like Sekiro, Bloodsouls, Prey or Nioh.
Any recommendations? I don’t have a huge preference as I’ve familiar with a lot of genres. I just really want something this weekend to spark that obsessive quest line play through that I had when first playing Nier or Horizon.
Thank you all!

What to expect from Yakuza games in chronological order

So I have been kind of marathoning my way through the Yakuza series after finally getting over my fear of how overwhelming it all seemed at a distance to take on.
I beat Yakuza 0 and Kiwami last week and after taking a few days to let my brain refresh I am going to be starting Kiwami 2 today. My question though is after Kiwami 2 and I start getting into the Remastered games that just dropped on PC, should I expect a drop in quality? I know the boys talk alot about not going backwards in a series in terms of release order, but there isn't really a choice here if I want to keep this show rolling in chronological order.

Just want to know if I should brace myself for incoming jank with the PS3 era games.

Marking for spoilers just in case some get dropped lol

Of all the Yakuzas now on gamepass pass, which should I start with?

I had started 0 a while but other games intervened.
When I go back, should I pick up where I left off in 0 (I really didn’t get that far) or will I get a more next gen experience with some of the remastered games?
Thanks!

i am looking for a very specific style of JRPG

so.... hello.... i am looking for a very specific style of JRPG.
theme: dark/revenge plot/ the more intense the conflict the better.
majority voice acted/ doesn't HAVE to be in English, but that would help.
combat: real time preferred, but persona 5 is making me not hate turn based as much.
actual cutscenes opposed to text bubble spaming the next button. a mix of both is okay if possible.
FF15,Persona 5, and Tales of berseria are as far as my JRPG knowledge goes, and let me tell you, i LOVEEDDDDDDD tales of berseria, and loving persona 5. FF15 was eh, the DLC's made that game for me personally.
currently playing FF7 Remake, and i am 6 chapters in and it is enjoyable so far.
thank you to anyone who chimes in to help me find new series to dive into!
trials of cold steel series has been good to me so far as well.

What do you think is the biggest step up in the series?

Kiwami 1 and Kiwami 2 was big for me but for me the biggest step up in overall quality is 4 for me.
Haven't finished it yet but gameplay and graphics improved dramatically and the story was a lot more interesting, well more written in my opinion.
Also the 4 playable characters is such a breath of fresh air as playing with Kiryu only for 4 previous games gets a bit tiring. What made 0 and 4 great for me was playing with the different personalities and fighting styles.

SIB Yakuza Remastered collection?

Hey all,
I recently saw Yakuza 3,4 and 5 on steam for sale for 60 dollars. Iv never played these games but heard they are not bad and just wanted some more feedback. Im running Ryzen 5 3600, GTX 1060 6gb and 16gb DDR4 3200mhz. How would it run on this set up? How is the game play? Are these games out of touch in terms of today's video games or even other new Yakuza games? Out of all the three games that being 3,4 and 5 which is best?

I appreciate your feedback! thank you

Which order should I play the games in?

So I just got the xbox game pass and saw all of the Yakuza games are on there, and because I've heard + seen good thing about them I wanted to try them out.
But here's my problem. After a quick Google search I found out that if I want to play them in chronological order I should start with Yakuza 0, however I've also learnt that this game is regarded as one of the best in the series and is the most recent one (which I'm guessing means best graphics).
I don't want to start with Yakuza 0 and then be disappointed when the rest of the games have worse graphics and aren't as enjoyable.
So I'm thinking I should just play them in release order but I'd really like to hear others opinions!
TLDR: Don't want to play Yakuza 0 first and be disappointed by the rest of the games.

So what kind of game are the yakuza series.

I have watched a few before you guys on YouTube of the new Yakuza game and I’m interested in getting into the series but I’m still not sure what kind of games they are?
They look like free-roam games but also look like linear fighting games. I was hoping someone could maybe compare them to another series or game to help my decision if I would enjoy them or not.
Also if I wanted to jump into the series where should I start ? I was thinking just buying the remastered collection but didn’t know if there was a better option.

What are the Pros and Cons of Playing Yakuza 5 before Kiwami 2?

I played and beat Yakuza 0 and Kiwami, but then I heard that Kiwami 3 is in development. I know that Yakuza 3 is generally considered the worst mainline game, so a upgraded version sounds very appealing.
My original plan was to just play Kiwami 2 and then 3-5 in the collection and then Judgement, but now if I'm gonna skip 3 then should I just go out of order? I was thinking of maybe playing 5 since I know that one is highly regarded. Also since I know the gameplay of Kiwami 2 is likely to be an upgrade from the gameplay of 5, it might be nice to experience that better.
So what games does 5 spoil and to what extent? Like I generally don't really mind getting accidentally spoiled since you gain insight into the forshadowing and setup and such. I don't search them out because who doesn't love a good surprise, but if it's just a few plot points that doesn't sound that bad? Will I understand what's going on or will I just be totally lost?
If I do play Kiwami 2 next, am I okay to just skip to 5 after? Like how good are 3 and 4? I generally heard pretty meh things, and I'm someone who wasn't actually a big fan of Kiwami. I loved Yakuza 0, but Kiwami just felt like it dragged on forever and it was way to tough and grindy and long and it had the same plot but with a different coat of paint.
Also how much does Judgement spoil from the earlier games? I actually played Yakuza 0 specifically because I really wanted to play Judgement and then was like fuck it lets play all of them. Now if I'm not gonna do that, can I just play Judgement?
Sorry for so many questions that I'm sure get asked a lot, but I also wanted more specific insight to my situation since I kinda derailed my original plan. Thank you!

How does GTA San Andreas have gang wars, car customization, darts, clothing, pool, dating, a storyline, casino's and so much more while this game has little to do besides killing gangs/stealing stuff in your downtime?

We seem to be going backwards in gaming, this game was supposed to be so much more dense. But after 40 hours of playing I have basically done all side missions and kind of feel like not starting it up again, I've practically seen all the content (except repeat missions or collectables).
I don't see how you fix this, there's so much content missing. I expected to be put in some kind of futuristic theme park with a heavy focus on doing fun, stupid, interactive stuff and meeting ridiculous individuals but there is just nothing like it.
So apart from the graphics:
GTA: San Andreas has more content than Cyberpunk. A 16 year old game has more to do.
How do you go from the current state of the game and turn it into what was heavily implied during marketing in a short time span? You don't.
Here's a big list of stuff that is missing, posted by u/RalphDamiani. But I don't feel like how significantly little open world content is available is made thoroughly enough.
These are things I expected to be in the game (all of them advertised or heavily hinted at):
- Actual wanted system. Not this alpha testing filler we got.
- Immersive NPCs that don't randomly disappear or all synchronise and run away in the same direction.
-Cool mini games with NPC's you meet (Like in the Yakuza series, who have had this since 2008)
- Some kind of gang system where you either control business' or have to deal with rival gangs
- Meaningful back stories that impact the main story
- New lines that make your character sound like he actually is a corpo instead of a street kid/nomad at all the time
- Car customization
- New gear system with obvious transmog options
- New cybernetic system
- Body sculpt system
- Better animations (I stopped using mantis blade because the strong attack animation takes like 10 seconds to execute)
- Fix all the small sound bugs, like footsteps not registering or no dialogue at all
And then this glorious statement comes out; '' We'll fix the bugs, don't worry ".
The bugs are the least of your problems, they suck but I don't care. They'll get fixed.
How about the other 70% of the game, you know, actual stuff to do besides the ridiculously short main story which you can finish in 10 hours? Why do they only put out a statement regarding stability when content is another huge factor?
I have no idea how complex a game world is to develop but as a creative marketing guy I'm familiar with creative processes and translating design into working features. A lot ideas get cut out because of technical restraints and money issues. Clients always want more than what they're willing to pay for.
But how do you make all your money back from pre-orders, and then deliver a product like this? (With a good 5-6 years of development time)
You do that when you only care about making money and don't care about the artistic integrity of your studio.

The developers/studio guys that worked hard are not to blame, they are the artists. I love what they did, it looks great. Corporate is to blame, they already made back their investment with pre-orders but want more sales with Christmas. How incredibly ironic that a game exploring toxic capitalism is largely ruined by toxic capitalism. What a joke.
TLDR: Great tech demo, love it. But come on bro, don't promise me a brand new lambo and deliver a beat up civic.

My Entirely Positive* One-sentence Game Awards for my Top 50 games completed in 2020

As patient gamers, we know that "Game Award Shows" are a farce; how many gamers can really vote for "game of the year" out of a selection of 20-30 new games? Only people with extreme amounts of money and time (and no dedication to just one game!)
Here's my awards for games I actually played to completion, rather than just saying "the one or two new games I bought in year X must therefore have been the best."
I decided to be entirely positive* (*mostly) with my awards, as I am known for saying "why are you spending 5-50 hours with something you don't like, you maniac?"

What are your personal favorite Top 10 games of all time?

I've been thinking of making a list just for myself but figured why not share it with this community and start a discussion. It could be beneficial for others who are looking for recommendations or just for you to get your thoughts out about a game. Below I ranked my personal 10 with a bit of description as to why I like them.
  1. Half Life 2 - This game hasn't left my #1 spot since it came out. It was the first single player FPS game I played. I haven't played Half Life 1 before Half Life 2 so I didn't really know that standing Valve had in the FPS community. But man, the gravity gun changed my life. The physics engine blew my mind. I was so happy that Half Life 2 included puzzles based on physics as well. I think its incredible that a game whose protagonist is a physicist compared to a soldier did so well. I remember when the demo came out I played the Ravenholm level probably 20 times. Then when I was able to buy Half Life 2 I played it another 20 times. I love the setting of Half Life 2, and the oppressive nature of the Combine. The strider fights were a spectacle and meeting DOG was amazing. I personally believe this game is perfect, between gunplay, story, setting, music. I almost cried at the end of Half Life Alyx and am so happy that Valve is continuing the universe. I believe that Half Life 2 still stands the test of time nowadays. It goes on sale often so please try it out! My ranking of the Half Life games are 2 > Alyx > Episode 2 > Episode 1 > Black Mesa > Half Life.
  2. Persona 4 Golden - Atlus shows a masterclass of JRPGs with the Persona series. I haven't played Persona 1 or 2 and my first intro to the series was Golden on the Vita. I remember I played it and finished it in one weekend during college. I didn't even leave my room and stayed up all night getting it done. The characters in Golden from Chie to Kanji are a joy to be around and building relationships with. The soundtrack of the Persona series ties so well with the atmosphere of each game. Persona 4 Golden was also the first JRPG I played and finished. Boy it was a joy. The combat got improved upon greatly in Persona 5 but having the introduction to the series through Golden puts it over the top for me. Soon after beating Persona 4 Golden, I played Persona 3 Portable which was a great game too! Persona 5 deserves all the accolades its getting but I believe that the groundwork for the Western audience was laid by Persona 4 Golden on the Vita.
  3. Judgement - As with many others, my first taste into the Yakuza franchise was when Yakuza 0 came on Steam. Since then I have finished 0, Kiwami, Kiwami 2, Judgement, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 in that order. While the other entries in this series are amazing, it was nice to see Ryu Ga Gotoku Studios venture out from the Yakuza storyline and focus on a detective story. The combat was a lot more fluid, almost reminding me of Majima's moveset in Yakuza 0. There was also a slice of life feel to Judgement. I think my favorite thing about the game was the pay off for completing side stories and relationships with people in the city. The last substory was amazing to see. I put this on the list even though I love the other games in the series so here is my ranking for the series. Judgement > Kiwami 2 > Yakuza 6 > Yakuza 0 > Yakuza 4 > Yakuza 7 > Kiwami > Yakuza 5 > Yakuza 3.
  4. Hotline Miami 2 - The Hotline Miami collection introduced me to Retrowave music, and I will forever be grateful for that. Hotline Miami plays as a top down shooter with a very David Lynch like story. The chapters jump from the Past to Future to Present in different ways focusing on different characters. It is all tied up nicely at the end of Hotline Miami 2 in my opinion. This game is as bloody as a pixel game can be. The sense of fear you get when you try to see if anyone heard your gunshot is insane. I put Hotline Miami 2 here instead of 1 because of the larger cast of characters and for the ending. While I did love Hotline Miami 1, 2 for me was just a bit better. This game is eye candy from the floor plans of each level, the retro Miami colors, and the gory way of killing enemies. Hotline Miami 1 started my appreciation for indie games as being powerhouses.
  5. Inside - I once heard someone on the Gameinformer podcast refer to this game as being carved out of one single block of clay. This game runs so smoothly you forget that there is a bunch of code in the background. Playdead is on a roll after Limbo and Inside in the creepy side scrolling puzzle platformer game. Inside had one of the most interesting backdrops I have seen. You are a child breaking into a facility of seemingly unknown reasons. But the game doesn't tell you that, there is no narration or voicework in this game. But its a testament to how carefully crafted this game is that the story can be told by what is happening in the background as you are making your way from left to right. The ending of this game caught me by surprise but I absolutely adored this game from start to finish.
  6. Wolfenstein: The New Colossus - Who doesn't love killing Nazis? Ever since Machinegames took over the franchise of Wolfenstein each entry has just gotten better and better. I've heard different qualms about TNC mainly about the story, but to be honest that was my favorite part of this game. It made BJ into a deeper character rather than a meathead and his Jewish ancestry being a background for fighting Nazi's was poetic. My favorite moment was, in the courtroom dream sequence, right after you get out and meet the memory of your mom. It honestly brought me to tears. The gunplay was as good as it gets as well as the characters on your ship. My one issue was the hacking minigame. I did love the sound effects used but felt overall it was a useless addition. Although I did complete all of it! If I had to rank all the Machinegames Wolfensteins it would go TNC > New Order > Old Blood > Youngblood.
  7. Mass Effect 2 - This game has about 200 hours of play time on my Steam. Bioware were masters of incredible RPG experiences. Mass Effect 2's companions were some of the best party members in an RPG ever. The storylines for each of these characters were a joy to take part in and it was extremely daring for Bioware to say, Hey! Lets put a suicide mission for the ending and have some of your characters permanently die. While the main villain wasn't that good, the overarching villain with culminated into the grand finale of Mass Effect 3 was worth it. I can't say enough as to how fleshed out the crew on the Normandy was. I'm excited to see any quality of life changes in the legendary edition!
  8. What Remains of Edith Finch - I was debating putting this on my top 10 but the more time passed, the more and more I was thinking about the experience playing this game. I didn't play Unfinished Swan so I didn't know much about the developer but I do love Annapurna Interactive's published games. Edith Finch was no different. A first person/adventure/walking simulator game with an engaging story about a very strange family, the game immediately dug its hooks in me and never let go. The house of the Finches felt like a maze but because of how well crafted this game is you never feel lost. The side story about the unfortunate ends of the family is engaging. Not enough can be said about the last family member's story you find and how incredible that experience was.
  9. Pokemon White - I am a huge Pokemon fan having bought one of each of the main series. I am also one of those people who liked SwSh. But I believe that Pokemon was at its best during the Black and White era. Created a new 150 pokemon while not including any past ones was risky, but for me it paid off. It was fun not being shackled by past favorites and looking towards a new generation. While it did seem that they just replaced skins for Pokemon, i.e. Swoobat/Zubat, TimburMachoke, etc. I liked almost all the new designs. The story for this game was also great. N was a great antagonist and actually made me sympathize with what was supposed to be your foe in the game. Why would I fight against someone who views that Pokemon should be free from trainers?
  10. Ori and the Will of the Wisps - I absolutely adored Blind Forest and when Will of the Wisps came out it was just more of Ori but with a bunch of quality of life improvements. The story was even more emotional than the first. Without spoilers I found the villain's story especially after the final fight to be incredibly touching. I love how Moon Studio works as well, being completely decentralized while producing beautiful games.

Yakuza Series - where to start?

I have always wanted to play these games (avoided spoilers too) ever since my PS2 days and have access to pretty much every Yakuza game released in Australia (PS2-PS4) but aside from a couple of hours of Zero, I've never got around to playing any of them.
To be honest, the fighting aspect appeals less to me than the sim/minigame/rpg aspects and storyline, so I'm not sure how much I will love them, but I'd like to give them a try.
Where is the best place to start?
As I said, I have the PS2 originals but would prefer the remakes and remasters on PS4 unless there's a reason not to. Some of these are fairly dated games but I am aware how heavily the Yakuza series maintains continuity (just the opening of one of the later games confused me so much I stopped playing right there and waited for Zero) so playing the story in order is probably a good idea.
Any advice is appreciated, from either hardcore fans of the series or just casual players who liked it.
I'm pretty time-poor and have a huge backlog of games already, but I would like to try and experience at least some of the series at some point in my life.
