Stirling Soaps first impressions: 12 varieties

Top Of The Chain started carrying Stirling soap samples back in January and I ordered about a dozen flavors almost as soon as they were in stock. It's the only place to get their samples in Canada after their prior seller shut down, so this was my first chance to try them out. All the below products were purchased by me, with a few of them being on behalf of a coworker who graciously let me try his samples before he used them.
There are loads of reviews about the lather and shaving quality of their products already. I concur with the general consensus that they make good shit for a good price. As long as you've got enough soap loaded on your brush (and enough water to turn that soap into lather) you're pretty much good to go, even with moderately hard prairie water like mine. About 20 shaves in with these soaps, I can say that every variety I tried performed about the same for lather / face-feel / post-shave / etc. Most of the scents have pretty decent staying power and I can pick up hints of fragrance well into my day, and I like that. I work in an office where heavy fragrances are discouraged, so anything that provides me a soft skin scent for several hours is perfect for my needs.
I'm writing this review because I want to talk about the scents, though; I don't see a lot of reviews that talk about what soaps smell like in terms that don't already require that you know what another soap or cologne smells like, so I want to describe my impressions in the most basic terms that I can. If there's a scent note I mention that you don't know the scent of, check to see if there are any essential oil sellers near you: they usually have little sample bottles that you can sniff for most of the notes I mention. I tried 11 different scented Stirling soaps (plus one unscented). Some I liked a lot and will purchase big tubs once I finish off my samples, while others I found so offensive that I wasn't even willing to open the tin again after the first shave. The experience was positive overall and has opened my eyes to a few more scents that I now realize might be up my alley, so I'll definitely be ordering more of them in the future. My thoughts are as follows, sorted in rough order from "I get cravings for this stuff when I see the container" to "you're dead to me, shave soap! Dead!"
Executive Man is chock full of pineapple goodness as you start to lather it up, along with some more subtle fruity notes. It goes sweet and smokey and woody from there with its jasmine / birch / juniper / patchouli heart notes. By the time it arrives at its drydown it's so far from anything else I'm familiar with that I can't even describe it, but it doesn't smell like any perfume that I had ever smelled previously. I expected this stuff to be highly overrated because I'm bitter like that, but I found this stuff so alluring that I ended up ordering an Aventus-inspired EdT to go with it.
Stirling Noir smells dark and green and I love it. There are definite notes of lavender, geranium leaf, fir needle, leather, oakmoss, and vetiver in here. I don't much notice the lemon or sandalwood myself. The original fragrance (Drakkar Noir) opens a little more harsh and dries down smoother and prettier (less geranium and vetiver, more fir and leather), but this soap is close enough to make me happy on days where I'm not allowed to wear the real thing. I don't care that Drakkar Noir has a seedy reputation. It smells friggin' good to me and it fills my heart with joy and memories of decades past.
Dunshire opens with citrus, peach, and calone (synthetic "aqua" scent) notes that come together to remind me a bit of Peach Snapple. It eventually dries down into a jasmine-sweet / musky fragrance. Acqua di Gio, which this is based on, smells somewhat similar when it's sprayed on a good sample card, but it pretty much just smells like a generic "fresh laundry perfume" when I apply it on my skin. As a result I like the Dunshire a lot more... so much that I'm again considering purchasing the Dunshire EdT to go with the soap.
Sandpiper is a tribute to YSL La Nuit de l'Homme. Up front it's deliciously spicy like a Nordic spice cookie, but the drydown has some vetiver notes that make it a little less gourmand. I find the original YSL perfume enticing but it makes my nose burn when I wear it. Sandpiper does not do that to me, so I prefer it over the real thing. With its baking-spices scent it's an obvious candidate for usage around the fall and winter holidays, and the lack of any "Christmas tree" scents makes it more multi-occasion than certain other shaving soaps.
Peach smells as advertised: like blossoms and ripe peaches, still hanging fresh on the tree. The fragrance is sweet and delicious and after my shave brush dries it smells like candy. I'll be honest: my wife picked this one for shaving legs and I just borrowed it because it smelled so good. No regerts.
Sharp Dressed Man reminds me of my garden in mid-summer. Sort of green / tropical floral / calone-y. Specifically, it smells like my Muana Loa daylily. It also smells a lot like Davidoff Cool Water's heart notes. Anyway, I do like it, but I think SDM has very little staying power compared to most of the other soaps I tried and I don't find the base notes are strong enough for me to ever find them... I've never detected the sandalwood or ambergris in this soap. My buddy loves it so I gave him my sample puck and we're going to split a Green Irish Tweed inspired EdT to see how it compares to the soap.
Arkadia opens with a vibrant blast of citrus and some earthy spice. Once the lather's washed off, it leaves an earthy vetiver base with some hints of wood from the cedar and patchouli. I feel like it's quite faithful to the original perfume. This one has some staying power: it took 8 hours before the vetiver finally faded from my skin when I tested this one out. I enjoy the green/woody heart of this soap more than the citrus opening but the whole thing is a bit brash for my taste. Good thing I just borrowed this one from my coworker to try it out.
Edit: Piacenza smells like citrus and incense florals to me. When I first tried it, the soap had picked up some woods and spices from the samples it was shipped between (Sandpiper and Ozark Mountain) and it smelled like an incense display at a head shop. Pretty cool, but wrong. After a few more shaves those unwanted fragrances disappeared and it transformed into an intense citrus opening with perfumey floral notes for several hours afterward. To be honest, I actually preferred it when it still had the incense note overpowering the florals.
Baker Street is named after the street where Sherlock Holmes lived... not the soft-rock song with the catchy saxophone riff. I'm not a gin drinker and I find the juniper a bit too strong, the jasmine not sweet enough for my taste, and the patchouli isn't quite as oriental as I'd like it to be. I just find it unappealing even though I enjoy many of the constituent components when they're on their own. I ended up giving this one away to my SDM buddy because I knew it would just collect dust on my shaving shelf.
Ozark Mountain smells like a good green candle or maybe a really good pine-tree-shaped car air freshener... In other words, absolutely not a scent I want on my face all day long, and in no way reminiscent of any real-life forest I've visited so far. I didn't notice any of the advertised "smoke" notes, which might have made it more bearable. I find it hard to tolerate for more than a few minutes, and unfortunately it seems to have more staying power than most of the other Stirling soaps I tried... so I'm glad that my coworker owns this one instead of me.
Unscented smells like... pretty much nothing. There's definitely no perfume and very little scent that I or my wife can detect. Great for shavers with overly sensitive noses (like my wife) or if you absolutely do not want your soap to clash with your cologne. However, If the latter is the case I prefer to use Cella because its tasty scent washes off so completely after the shave. There's nothing wrong with this soap - I just personally have no use for it.
Barbershop is a good example of how some scents smell different to different noses. To me, this stuff isn't sweet or fudgey or cookie-y or any of the usual descriptions... it's just vile. It just smells like baby powder grew up, dropped out of high school, and got a job digging filthy ditches, then got fired because it wasn't even competent enough to swing a shovel... whereas my buddy says it smells "like the inside of my grandmother's purse, which isn't a bad thing, but not what I want my face to smell like." Another coworker says it smells like vanilla, and another mostly picks up the amber and rum notes. There are plenty of people here who love this stuff and think it smells totally fantastic, but my nose isn't picking up the same aromachemicals as they are, I guess! Different noses work differently!
In summary, I think that most of the scents hit their targets right on the money even if I didn't like them. (It's possible for something to be well done yet unliked.) I've already got a few more Stirling scents picked out that I'd like to try if I can ever get my hands on the samples: Autumn Glory, British Leather, Gatlinburg, Glastonbury, Stirling Blue, Stirling Green, and Texas on Fire.
Tl;dr: Lots of these soaps smelled ril gud. Thank you for reading.

Newbie review dump for Hexennacht, Cocoa Pink and Alkemia

I apologize in advance for my basic reviews, I have a hard time picking out notes and describing what I'm smelling. But I loved browsing reviews when making my order decisions so thought I would contribute.
About me:
Love: citruses, fresh scents, stone fruit, vanillas, ambers, coconut
Dislike: most flowers, aldehydes, aquatics, manly or unisex scents, headshop scents, most mainstream perfumes
Hexennacht - perfume extract
Coffin Nails: (Tobacco leaves, tobacco flower, whiskey, ginger, anise, coriander, clove, spices, fruitwood sap, juniper berry, hay, vetiver, benzoin, labdanum, vanilla pods, tonka bean, honey.) I got this one due to seeing a lot of raves for it. I have a hard time picking up individual notes in this perfume, but to be fair I don't even know what most of these notes are supposed to smell like. I liked it at first, it had a pretty floral scent, but now that it's rested, I don't like it anymore. The mix of the tree sap with the tobacco flower just doesn't work for me. It's very sweet and musky and something about it makes me a bit sick. tdlr: too sappy and flowery for me, will destash. 1/5
Kentucky Bourbon & Woodsmoke: (Rich Kentucky bourbon, vanilla musk, teakwood, mahogany and light woodsmoke). It smells like sweet woodsmoke. It reminds me of wearing a thick scarf and my favorite boots, walking through the neighborhood while everyone is using their chimneys. That fall scent of smoke is in the air and it's absolutely delicious and atmospheric. I also find it a good note to mix with other perfumes when you want to ground something too sweet. I don't pick up any of the boozyness of bourbon and I think the vanilla is very soft in the background. tldr: fall chimney smoke atmospheric 4/5
Hyrule Castle: (Double bergamot earl grey tea, almond-orange tea cakes). This was such a unique scent, I keep huffing and huffing to try and identify what exactly I'm smelling. There is cake in there, and it's a dry perfume, almost in a mouth-puckering sense. I think it's the dry tea which doesn't have any creaminess in it. It smells like taking a bite out of a sweet citrusy cake and following it up with strong black tea. There is something fascinating about this mix, as I'm constantly smelling myself when I put it on. The perfume smells the same in the bottle as it does on the skin, and I didn't notice any change even after about 4 hrs of wear tdlr: I feel like I'm at high tea 4/5
Moloko Plus: (Steamed milk, sweetened condensed milk, coconut milk, and rice milk, infused with lavender simple syrup, coconut crème, and green cardamom poddiwods). This was such an amazing scent, and it was the first time I encountered a milky note in perfumes. Imagine a comforting cozy sweet rice pudding with a bit of herbal lavender in the background. I don't see myself wearing this during the day. there is something about the sweet creamy note that makes me worry that I will become sick of it if I overuse it. However, I do reach for it at night. I'd love this in cream format, just want to slather it on. Will probably get a full size spray perfume, for my pillow. I actually had to make some rice pudding the day I received this, it just sparked crazy cravings. tldr: cozy creamy pudding, which automatically relaxes and soothes you. 5/5
Thanatos: (Desiccated leaves, hedgerow blossoms, charred pinyon, aged cedarwood boughs, petrified tree sap, crisp fall air, laurel, clove bud, smoke-tinged balsam, santalum, and graveyard dirt). Another one that had a ton of rave reviews online. I smell the sweet resin and a bit of pine and woodiness in the background. There is a tinge of that sweet scent of dead leaves which blanket the forest ground around October. Again, it's very well blended and it's definitely not a one-note kind of perfume, and I have a difficult time picking out individual notes. I can't decide if I like this or not! Sometimes it feels a bit too sweet and woodsy for me, but under other circumstances it's a fresh forest scent which I really enjoy. tldr: resiny pine forest, not sure if it's my thing, 3/5
Gold Skulltula: (Golden amber, cardamom, vanilla orchid, vanilla bean, tonka, myrrh). I don't actually own this one but I had the chance to try it from a friend. THIS is the dupe I've been searching for, for Commodity's Gold perfume which is pretty $$ at Sephora. Will order a full size spray of this. It's a warm cozy sexy vanilla and amber scent, perfect for the winter months. I saw someone describe it as sexy waffles which I can actually kind of understand. tldr: sexy waffles, yes please. 5/5
Overall thoughts: Even liking 3/5 scents from a blind buy is huge for me, and although some perfumes just weren't my style, they still felt incredibly well blended. I think her perfumes smelled the least mainstream. These last about 3-5 hours on the skin and easily all day on clothing. I also like that I can get perfume extracts since I like more throw for my perfumes. I'm sad that there is a sample limit of 5 drams now, as I have a pretty long list I'd like to get from her.

Cocoa Pink - oil based
Virgin Island Water: (a citrusy cocktail of white bergamot, Jamaican lime, Sicilian mandarin. The citruses are accompanied by a note of copra, the white inner flesh of the coconut. The heart includes intensive Indian jasmine and sweet hibiscus, exotic ylang-ylang and cold, spicy ginger. The base of the composition includes sugar cane, musk and white rum). Oof this is a blue scent. It has a very strong citrusy scent and even a bit aquatic, although that could just be me being influenced by the fact that this perfume is actually a pretty vivid blue color. I think I was expecting a bit more sweetness in the background from the coconut and flowers, almost a tropical scent, but it's just a sharp citrus note. It feels almost basic, like that's the only note in it, and it's slightly unisex. I don't love wearing it, but it could be due to it being winter here and really cold outside. tldr: fresh citrusy lime, simple. 3/5
Beautiful Daydream: (Pink grapefruit essential oil infused with juicy Kaffir lime accented with the unadulterated gentle fragrance of clean cotton laundry dried only by the summer wind and sun under cerulean blue skies.) Just smell cotton, basically smells like soap. I expected it to be a lot more citrusy with just a slight base note of cotton. Would love it in either the diffuser or as a linen spray. tldr: fresh cotton laundry 3/5
Green Tea & Mint: (Leaves of peppermint & spearmint added to our green tea with a splash of marshmallow to sweeten it up.) I had really high expectations for this one, but there's something in there I don't like. It reminds me of public toilets, and I actually don't pick up either the green tea or the mints. tldr: I don't know what this is 1/5
Summer in Greece: (Mediterranean Fig, green tea, wild mint leaves, pistachio, clementine, bergamot, Ivy leaves, clary sage, lavender and tonka bean grounded with pale musk.) The only reason I ordered this one is because I had a summer wedding in Santorini and the name called out to me. It's slightly herby and dry, almost dusty a bit. I really cannot detect any of the other notes, it all just blends together. There is a similar note in here that I do not like and it's very prominent, just like in the Green Tea & Mint perfume. Could it be the green tea? Why do I keep wearing this if I don't love it? There's something about it that keeps drawing me in, maybe because it's not so 'one note' as many other perfumes. After about an hour it calms down and I smell much more of the mint and a little bit of fig. tldr: I cannot detect much in this, but it seems complex and I keep wearing it, trying to identify individual notes. 2/5
Black Voodoo: (black, spiritueuse double vanilla, butterscotch, bourbon vanilla, hot butter rum & coconut crème). This one is sweet! I smell the butterscotch immediately which I'm not really a fan of, I think it overpowers the other notes. After about an hour the butterscotch calms down and everything blends together so well that I have a hard time picking out individual notes. It's sweet but soft. tldr: I want to drink it, 4/5
The Un-Red: (This blend would make any vampire or other undead creatures stalk your bathroom. Buckets of bloody orange juice, sweet vanilla, bourbon vanilla, sandalwoods and ambers. Hide this one well or you will find it missing by morning.) In the bottle this has an orange-rubber scent, but on my skin it opens up more into a sweet creamy orange. It fully reminds me of eating an orange creamsicle on a hot summer day. The sandlewood is very faint in the background. I love orange and vanilla but there's something here that is a bit meh to my nose. I think it's that sweet creamy note, it keeps the scent from being a true orange. Or maybe it's the sandlewood that I don't like?? My nose is so broken tldr: eating a sweet melting orange creamsicle, 4/5
Black Vanilla: (CocoaPink's rich black amber blended with three different Vanillas). I got this as a sample of voluptous body butter. It smells and looks like a thick vanilla yogurt and it takes all my willpower to not lick the lid. The body butter is really thick and a tiny amount goes a long way, BUT it sinks in nicely and it's non greasy. I quite like it! I keep catching whiffs of the scent when it's on my hands. It's very much a vanilla scent but there's something that keeps it from going too gourmand. It's the creamy thick almost yogurt scent, it reminds me a bit of caramel as well. tldr: creamy caramel-vanilla yogurt, do not lick the lid. 5/5
Overall thoughts: The perfumes took a pretty long time to be sent out, almost a month. I'm glad they are in drams though, easier to use and open without getting them all over my fingers. I don't think there was anything in here that i really loved, and I also had some disappointments. The throw in general is ok for oil based perfumes, I get random whiffs here and there when applied to my wrists. It lasts about 4 hours. I got some summer scents and I am going on a trip to Australia next month. I am interested to see how they fare in hot weather, and whether my opinion of them changes. I'm also really interested in seeing if the smells change after resting a few months.

Alkemia - oil based
Apsara: (Darjeeling Tea and Purple Hyacinths) This one let me down a bit. I love the smell of hyacinths and it's been very difficult to find a perfume with this note. Sadly, it's a very sharp perfume. I guess it's the darjeeling tea giving it such a strong sharp scent? The hyacinth lingers there in the background but this flower has such a soft scent that it's really overpowered by the tea. Will let this one rest and see how it smells in a few months. tldr: bitter smell with a weak hyacinth undertone 1/5
Dalliance: (garden fresh English cucumbers, barely ripened figs, and sweet Pekoe tea.) Wow I really enjoy this one. Upon application I get the cool fresh cucumber (which I love) but then it fades very quickly. The figs take over along with the tea to create a soft fresh scent. It has a slightly citrusy base, almost like bergamot. This scent is serene and refreshing and it's the kind you would encounter in a luxurious spa. tldr: I would wear this, and also diffuse for a rich spa feel. Will consider a FS for the summer months. 5/5
Liliacs Along the Winding Drive: (Lilacs, Spring Violets, Rainwater, River Stone) Flowery and powdery, mainly. I get a faint liliac scent and something powdery, maybe the violets. Don't like it and had to wash it off after an hr or so. Funny how many scents I absolutely adore in real life (roses, strawberries, liliacs) but hate in synthetic forms. tldr: powdery floral air freshener 1/5
Elixir of Aphrodite: (A love spell of Persian apricots dipped in orange blossom honey swirling with a sensual enchantment of peach and plum blossoms, mimosa, white star jasmine, ambrette, guiac wood, and vanilla musk.) Very fruity, girly, summery scent. It's a very sweet stone fruit scent with honey in the background. I will use up the sample but probably will not get a FS, it is too sweet and youthful for me. tldr: true to description, it's a sweet honey-peach-apricot scent 4/5
Moroccan Tea: (An elegantly understated yet intriguingly energizing blend of delicate pekoe tea leaves infused with a touch of fresh gingermint-spearmint, osmanthus flowers, and gunpowder matcha tea from a Moroccan recipe.) Yessss, here is the mint perfume I wanted. I expected the Green Tea & Mint from Cocoa Pink to smell like this but that was a letdown. This one is minty and fresh and I absolutely adore it. Cannot wait to wear it in my upcoming trip to Australia and see how it fares in boiling temperatures. tldr: spearmint with light matcha in the background, very cooling and delicious 5/5
Trick or Treat: (A grownup confection of black licorice, mandarin orange peel, caramelized brown sugar, bourbon vanilla, candied ginger, tonka bean, blonde patchouli, cedar tips, oakmoss, and sandalwood.) It's very much a sexy grown up mandarin orange with faint ginger, licorice and wood scents in the background keeping it from going too tropical or summery. Either way, I quite like this one. tldr: fall orange scent, would consider getting a FS 5/5
Cidre d' Automne: (Freshly pressed varietal fall apples delicately blended with subtle autumnal spices.) This one starts out with some fresh apple and becomes spicy very quickly. It's not bad, and I will probably use up the sample but it's not FS worthy. It's very much a Bath&Body Works kind of fake autumn scent. It fades considerably within an hour and it's pretty much completely gone within 2 hours tldr: spicy apple candle 2/5
Overall thoughts: I liked that the order shipped within less than a week and it got to Canada relatively fast. The etsy store also means I can see the prices in Canadian currency, and the shipping prices are cheaper than Hexennacht. The scents really don't last on me at all, maybe 2 hours or so, and the throw is non existent. I don't like having to literally smell my wrists just to get a faint whiff of my perfume. I guess the samples are doing their job, they allow you to just sample the scent. If I get full sizes of anything, it would be in perfume spray. Dalliance, Moroccan Tea and Trick or Treat are all FS worthy, they are unique scents I haven't encountered before.

Sample Reviews (HoG, Alkemia, Poesie, The Strange South, Stereoplasm)

Hi, everyone! I've been ordering just a ridiculous amount of sample packs lately and thought it was time I did some reviews. So here's part one! Some quick notes about my testing process: I typically wear perfume oils in my hair, but all of these were skin-tested first (easier to test multiple scents at once!) and only the ones I really liked moved on to all-day wear in my hair. Everything was tested multiple times, both fresh from the mail and after several weeks of rest.

HAUS OF GLOI
First impressions: TAT was kind of long (almost 2 weeks) but not terrible. Everything was neatly packed, no spills, and I appreciated the handwritten note + free candy! (Sidenote: Some of my other sample orders came with candy too. I forget which ones, but rest assured I loved all of it. I will never say no to candy.) The drawstring bag that the perfume samples came in was also a plus. I ordered the Hauswarming Box which came with 2 unscented bubbling scrubs, 1 unscented pumpkin butter, and 4 perfume samples (+1 extra perfume sample they threw in). For $15 with free shipping this was a great deal! I really like both body products and have been using them regularly. The scrub does a great job exfoliating and I really like the way it lathers up. The pumpkin butter is nice and thick, but not too greasy, and absorbs well into my skin leaving it silky and moisturized. Now on to the scents...

Litchi Milk Tea (Tart lychee fruit and black tea met with a splash of coconut milk) In the sample: Super accurate to the description! I get a fresh blast of lychee with a background of milky tea. Reminds me of bubble milk tea. On me: Pretty much exactly the same. I adore this scent, so this one actually got a hair test. It's a fairly strong scent with decent throw and wear time, though it didn't last as long as I would like (I'm used to perfume lasting until I wash my hair). Verdict: 9/10, would buy a full size.
Honeysuckle Lemon Curd (Rich lemon curd with a touch of fresh honeysuckle) In the sample: Very sweet lemon, definitely reminiscent of lemon bars or some other lemon pastry. I can't really pick out the honeysuckle individually though I'm sure it's adding to the sweetness. Unfortunately, it's also very Yankee Candle. On me: Yup, a total candle scent. It smells good but I don't think it really works as a perfume. Verdict: 7/10, would not buy fs perfume but maybe a bath product or lotion.
Apothecary (Old books, bubbling concoctions, herbs and creaking floor boards! A pure essential oil blend of: Lemongrass, rosemary, blood cedar, bitter basil, lavender and the tiniest drop of vetiver) In the sample: When I first got this it was all lemongrass all the time. Now, after a few weeks of rest, I can smell some other notes like the rosemary and lavender. It's a little bit of an herbal stinkbomb, tbh. Not sure how I feel about it. On me: Lemongrass and cedar are dominant, but I can smell the rest hanging out in the background. It's ok? I think this is another one that would be best as a bath/body product if at all. Verdict: 5.5/10, would not buy fs perfume but maybe a bath product.
Lavender Sugar (Bulgarian lavender and a heaping spoonful of pure Muscadovo sugar) In the sample: Super sweet lavender. It kind of reminds me of BPAL TKO, which is a scent I wanted to love and didn't. On me: About the same, maybe a bit less sweet. The lavender smells really artificial? Not digging it. Verdict: 2/10, would not buy full size.
Covet (Warm amber, sticky aged patchouli, and thick vanilla syrup) This was the bonus freebie that was included with my order. In the sample: Hello patchouli! Accurate to the description, I suppose. Just a thick syrupy patchouli. On me: The patchouli takes a step back and lets the amber come forward a little more. It's… ok, I guess. These are three notes that I generally enjoy, but this particular blend just strikes me as generic. It's also kind of cloying and I wouldn't want to be stuck in a cloud of it all day. Verdict: 3/10, would not buy full size.

Overall thoughts: In general I found the scents to be simple and/or bordering on candle territory. I think many of them are better suited to bath products, which is fine because the Haus makes some good ones. I am still willing to experiment with perfume samples in the future though (especially some of the Halloween scents) and will definitely be buying more bath products and a FS of Litchi Milk Tea.

ALKEMIA
First impressions: I ordered during the July sale and picked up Arcanum Experiments No. 14 along with 10 samples and TAT was very quick. Packaging was secure with no spills and included both a business card and a printed thank you card with instructions for optimal perfume wear & care. Nice and professional!

Arcanum Experiments No. 14 (We've lost the recipe, but this was something that involved experimentations with sweet vanilla, jasmine, plums, and white patchouli) In the bottle: Jasmine and vague fruitiness and soap. It was even soapier fresh from the mail, but almost a full month later it's still pretty soapy. On me: I can tell this would be really beautiful if not for the damn soap. I can smell all the listed components, but that sharp soapy note never goes away. Not even fancy bar soap either. Dish soap. Bleh. Verdict: I want to love this, so I guess I'll let it age for a few more months and see what happens. As is, 4/10.
Elixir of Aphrodite (A love spell of Persian apricots dipped in orange blossom honey swirling with a sensual enchantment of peach and plum blossoms, mimosa, white star jasmine, ambrette, guiac wood, and vanilla musk) In the sample: This is like being punched in the face with peaches. I can't even smell anything else. On me: Still intense sugary peaches. When I first got this it was like peach gummy candy, now it's like a mix of that and syrupy canned peaches. I think maybe the honey is giving it that syrupy quality. Verdict: 7/10, probably don't need full size but I'll enjoy the sample.
Carmen 7 (An indecent proposal of succulently spiced pear, exotic lychees, decadent french pralines, bourbon vanilla, and crushed almond blossoms leads to a ménage à trois of gardenia, star jasmine, and magnolia illuminated by the afterglow of a sensuously musky amber) In the sample: It's very faint. I mostly smell the amber and spiced pear with occasional whiffs of something vaguely floral. On me: About the same? I can not stress enough how light a scent this is. I have to really jam my face into my wrist to get anything. There are so many good notes in this and I wish I could smell any of them. Verdict: 4/10 because it's so weak, would not buy full size.
Absinthe and Laudanum in the Afternoon (An intemperate intoxication of galbanum, laudanum accord, tonka bean, vetivert root and narcotic wormwood swooning into an euphoric delirium of opium poppy, poet's jasmine, and french lavender) In the sample: Spicy and a little sweet. On me: Still spicy and sweet and warm. I can't pick out individual notes, but I dig it. It feels like an old-timey gentleman's cologne. Decent throw and longevity. Verdict: 7.5/10, would consider full size.
Au Lait (Creamy warm milk cuddled up with tonka and wild honey, gently touched by caramelized brown sugar) In the sample: Hot buttered nuts?? I live in NYC and this somehow smells like walking past one of the honey-roasted nut carts, it's wild. At least I didn't get the sour milk experience so many other folks have. Although after several weeks of rest it is picking up an odd off note. On me: Whatever that funky note is, it comes out more on me. It almost smells like sweat? Bleh. This is a weird one. Unfortunately it's also one of the stronger, longer-lasting Alkemias. Verdict: Originally would have said 6/10, now 2/10, would not buy full size.
Affaire de Coeur (A flirtatiously feminine enchantment of gourmand white sugar musk, creamy Madagascar vanilla, white sandalwood, tonka bean, white amber, and pale sugar cane) In the sample: Yummy sugary vanilla. On me: Sugary vanilla with a touch of playdoh. Even if it didn't lean playdoh-y it's pretty but kind of boring. Verdict: 6/10, would not buy full size.
Foxfire (Our special Ghost Fire blend of ambres blanc infused white sugar with sexy swirls of jasmine aldehydes, and night flowering nardo) In the sample: Hard to describe. Pretty and sweet and sort of melon-y? I don't get the florals at all. On me: Same as in the sample. It's not the most exciting scent, but it's very pretty and I can see why it's a favorite. Verdict: 8/10, will probably buy full size.
Madam Pearl (The essence of a deliciously scandalous tea reading. White tea leaves on fine bone china, a parchment letter from a mysterious stranger, a menage a trois of elegant vanillas, and a piquant pinch of aphrodisiac white pepper) In the sample: White tea with faint whiffs of vanilla and white pepper. On me: More vanilla and less pepper. It doesn't strike me as super unique, but it's nice and elegant and very wearable. I did try this in my hair for a day and it didn't last as long as I would like. Verdict: 7.5/10, would consider full size.
Turquoise Trail (Cota (Navajo tea) infused with bergamot, mandarin peel, blackberry leaf, black currant, high mountain sage, grapefruit blossoms, orange flowers, petigrain, orris root, vetiver root, incense cedar tips, galbanum, tonka, and white sandalwood) In the sample: Super duper faint. It's hard to pick out any individual notes. Maybe a little bit of citrus and powdery orris? On me: Am I even wearing this? I have to mash my face into my skin even harder than I did for Carmen 7 to pick up anything. It's a little sweet, a little herbal. Could be a nice scent if I could actually smell it. Verdict: 4/10 for potential, would not buy full size.
Haiku (A delicate meditation of jasmine pearl tea, white sandalwood, bamboo, and green tea buds illuminated by teaflower aldehydes) In the sample: Jasmine and soapy soapy soap. On me: Just the soapiest soap that ever soaped. I can smell a little bit of jasmine and a little bit of tea if I really try but overwhelmingly this is Dial soap. Verdict: 1/10, would not buy full size.
The Mist Becoming Rain (Rainwater, mist drenched hazel wood, meadow grasses, sage blooms, orris root, ozone, grey amber. Deep, dark, cool and mysterious) In the sample: Something very sharp and almost smoky + the suggestion of green plants. On me: Wet plants. So pretty accurate, I guess? It still has a sharpness to it that's a bit much for me. Turns into Irish Spring after drying though. Why does Alkemia love to go soapy on me?? Verdict: 3/10, would not buy full size.

Overall thoughts: So much soap! There were a lot of misses here. Scent strength and longevity were also an issue. The sample vials don't leak, but they are some of the messiest to open that I've ever experienced. I always get oil all over my fingers no matter how carefully I try to open them. There were a few scents I liked enough to maybe spring for full sizes and I'd be willing to try samples again (steering far away from anything that might go soapy), but overall I don't think Alkemia is a good match for me.

POESIE
First impressions: TAT was very quick. It took a while for my order to actually reach me because it got stuck in mail limbo, but that's on USPS not Poesie. Love the personal touch of the handwritten note! Samples were packed securely, wrapped cutely, and did not leak. They are also some of the larger samples I've received, which is awesome! My only complaint is that the labels keep peeling up at the edges.

Darcy (bright but bitter grapefruit gives way to an accord of sultry vetiver and sweet, rich vanilla) In the sample: Mmmmm grapefruit. I also get a whiff of vetiver, but it's firmly in the background. On me: Unfortunately the grapefruit is a lot weaker on me and it quickly becomes the vetiver and vanilla show. I was hoping for a really sharp, bitter grapefruit. Verdict: 5.5/10, would not buy full size.
Wickham (a classic fougere accord with citrus and sage opens and is quickly corrupted by a dissipated blend of whiskey, tobacco and the polished wood of a card table) In the sample: When this was fresh from the mail I got more of the fougere, but now it's a blast of whiskey. I like whiskey notes sometimes but hate the actual thing and this smells pretty realistic. Bleh. On me: Luckily on me it's a more even mix. The whiskey takes a step back to make room for the citrus and sage and it becomes quite pleasant. Unfortunately it fades quickly. Verdict: 6.5/10, probably don't need full size but I'll enjoy the sample.
Twice to Tea (a strongly brewed cup of Earl Grey tea delicately infused with all natural lavender absolute, sweetened with vanilla syrup, and lightened with a splash of milk) In the sample: Strong and milky and weird. I think I've forgotten what Earl Grey smells like?? I thought I liked it, but maybe I don't. On me: Pretty much the same. I can't really smell the lavender or vanilla, though I imagine they are contributing to the overall weirdness. This is one of the stronger, longer lasting Poesie scents I tried. Verdict: 5/10??? I can't make up my mind about it, but definitely no full size.
Madar (comforting, creamy Basmati rice pudding flavored with orange flower water, saffron, cinnamon, cardamom, and dried rose petals, then piled high with sugared pistachios) In the sample: Definitely creamy. Kind of weird. Hard to identify any individual notes. On me: More like rice milk than rice pudding, still very creamy. I get hints of orange and spices (cardamom is that you??), unsure about the rest. It's very light. I haven't tested it in my hair yet, but I should. Verdict: 7/10, would consider full size after more testing.
Watson (lavender in bloom, apples plucked straight from the tree, sweet dried tobacco leaves, a scattering of hay, polished mahogany & rosewood) In the sample: Lavender and apples with a woody background. There's something very floral about the apple note. Pretty! On me: Still lavender and floral apple, but on the drydown something weird happens that makes it smell perfume-y? Like those perfume test strips in the middle of catalogs. Maybe one of the woods is doing it? It also fades quickly. Verdict: 6/10, would not buy full size.
Cloudless Sky (apples, strawberry and rhubarb sprinkled in sugar and wrapped in tender pastry, a big cup of chamomile tea, a tiny house in the Nova Scotia woods) In the sample: Fruity pastry! I mostly smell the strawberry, but I can tell that it's mixed with other things. The pastry note is buttery and delicious. Not getting chamomile tea or anything that reminds me of a house in the woods. On me: Pretty much the same. Fruity pastry goodness. The fruit is really sugary. Verdict: 6.5/10, probably don't need full size but I'll enjoy the sample.
Mädchenland (floral Pacific Rose apples, luscious yellow cake, warming spices, a delicate drizzle of caramel) Bonus sample with my order, I asked to be surprised. In the sample: This was a good pick! In the sample, at least, I like it more than anything I picked out for myself. I definitely get apples and caramel and spices and some cake to hold it all together. It reminds me a lot of BPAL Eve's Big Apple VII which is apple cardamom cake. On me: Smells the same when wet as in the sample, but the apple fades a lot on drydown. It ends up more like spice cake with a hint of apple. Verdict: 6.5/10 because of the weak drydown, would not buy full size. (Also, out of curiousity, I did a test with Mädchenland on one arm and Eve's Big Apple VII on the other. They're not identical—EBA is spicier in the bottle, doesn't have caramel as far as I can tell, and retains a much stronger apple on drydown—but they're pretty close!)

Overall thoughts: Overall pleasant scents but no real stunners. Many of them turned out different than I expected. I also wish they were stronger and lasted longer! That said, I'm open to giving Poesie another go.

THE STRANGE SOUTH
First impressions: TAT was a little slow (just shy of 2 weeks) though that is actually faster than the current TAT after the sale. Can't complain, I suppose! The samples were packaged securely and cutely, no leaks, and I appreciated the handwritten note about the sale. Luckily I was able to test the samples in time to take advantage of it!

And From the Strong Comes Sweet (Honeycomb, peach syrup, galbanum, rice milk, and a lock of golden hair from the lion's mane) In the sample: Powdery, pollen-y honey, something bitter and herbal which I assume is galbanum, and a hint of peach. On me: The peach syrup is a lot stronger on me, balancing out the pollen aspect of the honey. It's definitely sweet and syrupy but not like peach candy. It smells fresh and real. The galbanum keeps it from becoming cloying. Truly beautiful. Verdict: 9/10, ordered a 10ml during the sale.
Slipped Between His Teeth (Ambergris, white florals, cedarwood, bone meal, blackcurrant, and marjoram) In the sample: It's a little intimidating and stinky in the sample. I can smell the blackcurrant and white florals, but the marjoram is really strong and makes it skew sort of minty?? On me: Luckily, it works on me. The marjoram calms down and the cedar shows up and everything plays nicely together. It's a really interesting floral and I absolutely can not stop sniffing it whenever I test it. Verdict: 8/10, ordered a 5ml during the sale.
The Drowned Choir (Black oak, cypress, swamp mud, ambergris, moss, elderberry, and honeysuckle) In the sample: It's very faint, but I can smell a bit of honeysuckle and elderberry as well as a generally woodsy scent. On me: It's still a light scent, but the elderberry really blooms on me and it becomes gorgeous purple berries with a swampy background. Love it! Verdict: 8.5/10, ordered a 5ml during the sale.
The Ancient One (Kentucky timber, cedar chips, cherrywood, amber, and lavender fougère) In the sample: Super weird, not what I expected! I was drawn in by the lavender fougere but I can't smell it at all and what I can smell is super cloying maple syrup + celery + smoke + a hint of cedar. A smell which I assure you is even stranger than the sum of its parts. My nose is so confused. On me: Still weird, still cloyingly sweet. I've tested it so many times and can't decide how I feel about it. Verdict: ???/10, would not buy full size.
Je Veux Mon Livre (Tea leaves and sage pressed between the ancient pages of a leather-bound grimoire) In the sample: Tea and sage and leather, but it's more new than ancient. On me: Definitely new leather. The paper smells new as well, so the ancient grimoire vibe falls a little flat. It's still pleasant though. It's a fresh clean smell for nerds! I didn't think I needed a full size of this, but it's growing on me. Verdict: 7/10, would consider full size.
Rosy Maple Lemonade (Pink lemonade and a sprig of basil sweetened with maple syrup) Bonus sample! In the sample: Deliciously tart pink lemonade with a hint of maple. I would never have picked this for myself, but I like it! On me: The maple gets stronger as it dries down and the lemonade fades until it is mostly maple syrup (the good, authentic kind though). I wish it would stay more balanced. Still enjoy it a lot more than I thought. Verdict: 6.5/10, ordered a 5ml during the sale because I have no self control.

Overall thoughts: Lots of winners here! I really liked the majority of these scents and they had decent staying power. I ended up ordering full sizes of 4/6 of them during the sale along with a bunch more samples. So far I'm really digging this house. My only complaint is that the little stick part used to open the sample caps is prone to bending/breaking off. I can barely open my sample of And From the Strong Comes Sweet anymore.

STEREOPLASM
First impressions: TAT was quick and so was the shipping from Canada. Packaging was secure and very fun (glitter tissue paper!) and nothing leaked. I love the tiny bottles with screw caps! They look cute and they are much easier to open than traditional sample vials. I also appreciate the printed reference sheet and test strips which were included. As well as the many freebies (5 total)!

Nemesis (A tangled infusion of mulled spice and cream, pressed lemon peel and a drop of bitter neroli. Traces of opium poppy, black walnut fruit and raw cinnamon bark) In the sample: It's faint, but I can smell citrus and spices and something sweet. On me: Still a very light scent. After drydown it is a sweet creamy lemon with a hint of spice. It's nice, I just wish it was stronger! Verdict: 5/10 because it's so light, probably won't buy full size.
Diplomat (Tightly-bound leather pages, grand mahogany and an enfleurage of night-blooming jasmine in saffron and ancient myrrh oil. Base notes of charred clove, royal amber and a touch of smoked sage) In the sample: Jasmine and myrrh and a faint whiff of the clove and sage. Weird but pleasant. On me: There is a bubblegum sweet quality to this that I don't understand and I wish I got more leather and sage, but I still like it. I think? Verdict: 7/10, would consider full size.
Rosemère (Maple tarte au Sucre topped with candied apricot and creamy strawberry petals. Delicate rose blush with a touch of pink lily absolute and vintage lace extrait de parfum are detectable closer to the skin) In the sample: Super duper sweet maple. The sugariest maple. On me: This definitely smells pink. I can't smell the fruit or florals, they just blend together into this intensely sweet creamy almost buttercream frosting scent that is strong enough to compete with the maple. I like it, but I'm not sure how often I would wear it. Verdict: 6.5/10, would consider full size.
Lutra Canadensis (Soothing chai tea with zesty and energetic house tangerine oil. Playful yet warm and inviting!) Bonus 2ml sample included with order. In the sample: Orange and chai! On me: Yup, just a really nice orange chai. Someone else described it as a cold brew and I can totally see that. Or maybe orange chai tea bags that haven't been steeped yet. Verdict: 7/10, not available in full size as far as I know. Probably don't need one anyway, but I will enjoy this sample!
Low Tide (Top notes of watermelon candy, sunscreen and shiny green sea glass. Undercurrents of soaked driftwood and small abandoned whelk shells) Bonus 1ml sample In the sample: Watermelon candy (almost like a Jolly Rancher) + a bit of coconut. On me: This was the surprise hit of the order! I would never in a million years have ordered it for myself because I'm wary of sunscreen notes, but I love this so much. It's watermelon candy and the lingering smell of a day spent at the beach. There is a watery quality to the notes that keeps them from being overpowering, but it's not faint or difficult to smell at all. Verdict: 8/10, would buy a full size.
Lydia (A uniquely transformative scent; opens with agrestic lavender and earl grey tea with snips of fresh fennel greens. A flood of soapy emerald green bubbles then rests softly into clean sunset musk.) Bonus 1ml sample In the sample: Lavender and something green. On me: Lavender which starts going soapy almost immediately. As soap scents go, it's not terrible. It's definitely nicer after several weeks of rest too. Still a bit soapy after the drydown, but the musk balances it. It's light and inoffensive though not really my thing, but it was interesting to try! Verdict: 3.5/10, would not buy full size.
Magnifique (Deceptively nuanced pineapple set free to the fresh night air. Deliberate (or possibly accidental) top notes of sinister thyme, cold sweat and fresh blood orange.) Bonus 1ml sample In the sample: Pineapple bubblegum?? Fresh from the mail the sweat note was really sharp and sour and unpleasant, but it seems to have calmed down. On me: Wow, yeah, this has really improved after resting. There is still a bit of sharpness to it when wet, but not nearly as nasty as before and it seems to go away quickly. Dry, I get the pineapple and orange and the other notes, while not super noticeable, are definitely making the blend more complex. Again, it's not for me but I'm glad I got to try it. Verdict: 4/10, would not buy full size.
Wolfe Island (Intoxicating vanilla bourbon rolled over deep green moss and crumbling wet earth. Edges of smoldering birch notes, sticky calyxes and book-pressed tobacco leaves) Bonus 1ml sample In the sample: Super sweet! Probably the vanilla bourbon. On me: Still sweet, but I can smell more of the green and woody notes coming through. I like it a lot! Verdict: 7/10, would consider full size.

Overall thoughts: Lots of good scents, including some that brought me out of my comfort zone, and even the ones I didn't particularly like were interesting at least. I'm definitely going to grab a full size of Low Tide along with more samples. I'm really impressed with the quality considering this is such a new house and I am excited to see what comes next! My only complaint is that some of these fade quickly or are faint to begin with.

This post has gotten long enough and the rest of my recently purchased samples need more resting & testing, so I'll stop here. But keep an eye out for part two that will include Solstice Scents, Possets, Twisted Wonderland, Sixteen92, and Hexennacht! Hope you enjoyed. (:

A review of the Martin de Candre lineup - part one of four (Rose)

Between a trip there this summer, and a recent order to pick up the new limited series scents, I have now officially gone overboard with MdC. The lineup now contains three soaps for their usual offerings (original, fougere, and unscented) plus two limited offerings rose and vetiver that will be available for an undisclosed amount of time this holiday season. Having ordered as soon as the new soaps went live, I received my shipment 6 days later, France to Canada.
The rose scent of this soap is different from rose scents I’d previously smelled, it can best be described as very intense single-note rose. Compared to other rose scents, I find this one doesn’t skirt the edge of being “a little too feminine” - this doesn’t remind me of something a grandmother might wear, nor does it smell like turkish delight or other deserts that use rose water. It’s a bold scent, and while I might not want to smell like this all day, it’s about as masculine as I would expect a floral scent to be.
Performance is as always top tier. There are some people who are fans, and some less impressed by MdC, but the majority opinion (and mine as well) is that this is some of the best performing soaps on the market. I find that only one other soap maker performs as well for me, placing this at the pinnacle of lather performance in my mind.
The price of the rose soap is the highest of their offerings 43 euro (ex-vat, plus shipping) a 25% increase over the original. This is based on the fact that the rose essential oil is very expensive, I believe they source it locally from Grasse (the fragrance capitol of France, and source for the fragrance in many French fragrances, such as Chanel’s no. 5), and it takes somewhere in the vicinity of 60,000 roses for a single ounce of rose absolute. When I had spoken to them a few months ago, I asked if they had considered making a rose soap, and the response I got was that it wouldn’t happen due to the prohibitive cost of rose absolute. Is it worth the cost? That’s a difficult question to answer - performance is great, and the quality of the fragrance is fantastic, which in my limited experience, beats the other rose scents I’ve smelled by a long shot. There’s also the fact that they’re giving you 200g of a soap that requires very little to make abundant lather, so this tub will last much longer than other soaps If you’re looking for a high quality single-note rose, and can stomach the price, I’d say get it.
