queen size quilt measurements

queen size quilt measurements - win

Everyone seems to measure exactly, line up, and press etc so carefully. I just start sewing. I do do some pinning maybe...then start....I just finished my third queen size quilt.

Is this called "crazy quilting"? Does it count as quilting? I really like the finished products. I do make mistakes and try to really learn from them for next time. I like reading quilting blogs and here etc for some ideas and advice. But I notice everyone seems to quilt with such mathematical precision...no shade...I'm just wondering if I am alone or?

[Transcripts] Disparity- Chapter 7: In the Lap of Luxury

##Wiki/Chapter list = First Chapter = Previous = Next

Xant found himself holding on for dear life, his body crammed into a vehicle it clearly wasn’t designed for. His tail was squished between the tall seat and the frame of the machine, his legs too far apart for them to sit comfortably in the narrow footwell, so he was almost sideways in the forward-facing seat, but that also gave him a clear view of its pilot’s insane method of ‘driving’ the shaking contraption.
Jasmine didn’t even need to look where her feet and hands were going, moving them simultaneously to shift in and out of gear by instinct, all the while singing harsh, deep-throated songs at the top of her lungs.
Xant had been observing the human since her revival, and while she had had her ‘aggressive’ outbursts, brought on through stress and despair respectively, to see her exercise such aggression was fascinating. She was entranced, focused on some unknown ‘enemy’ and screaming her pent up emotions at ‘it’. Xant had never seen such emotional power simply blasted into the atmosphere without worry or consequence, but he couldn’t deny he was caught up in the triumph and relief the song gave her.
With practised ease, Jasmine stopped the car at the base of the enormous craft, then gleefully jumped out to climb atop the roof again. “Up here, Xant!” she called.
The doctor squirmed his way out of the car and stood on the ground, looking up at the human. She pointed to a small thin ladder welded to the side of the ship’s stern. “We need to climb that to get on board.”
Xant stared at her and then at the wide jump needed to cover that distance.
“Is this another attempt at humour?” The human did laugh, so he supposed he was right.
“Well, we could always wait for Rynard to throw you!” She smiled, making a hand motion of hefting a ball. “Like tossing a dwarf!” She giggled.
Xant for the first time questioned Jasmine’s intelligence.
“Perhaps we left you in stasis too long…”
He quickly examined the gap. It was going to be an extraordinary effort for him to climb atop the vehicle, let alone cross the divide with his physical ability alone. He tried to mimic Jasmine’s method of climbing on the car, but his hands and feet were not able to find the small gaps her narrower ones could find. In the end she had to pull him up, and felt the roof bow with his weight. From up top the distance to the ladder seemed even greater. “How exactly do you propose we climb the ladder from here?” he asked her, but Jasmine was still riding the exhilarating high of being ‘thunderstruck’.
“Like this!”
Without so much as a run-up Jasmine leapt towards the ladder and landed with precision, her elongated limbs showing an agility Xant had not considered during the physical examination. “Let me reframe the question,” he huffed. “How exactly do you expect me to climb the ladder from here?!” “Oh it’s not that far, it’s barely a jump!”
“Zenthi don’t ‘jump’.” “That offer for Rynard to throw you is still on the table.” Xant scoffed, took a deep breath and rationalised the situation.
He was in a military-grade suit, so while his weight and aerodynamics would be affected, his strength was increased and any fall damage negated through the armour and pain blocker chems. So, even if he fell, the only thing that would suffer would be his pride. Another uncomfortable thought peeked through the rationale.
He said he wanted to follow Jasmine. This would mean having to keep up with her. He couldn’t do that if he forever deliberated his shortcomings.
Xant inched closer to the edge of the car and Jasmine helpfully reached out to him, hanging precariously from the metal bars. “I’ll catch you!” She encouraged him. Her arms closing the distance boosted his confidence considerably, and he swayed his body back and forth, ready to leap. This would count as the most adventurous he had been in the steel suit, forever wary of Rynard’s warning of torn ligaments. Xant closed his eyes and pushed himself forward, the suit multiplying the force needed to get him across and almost smashing into the side of the yacht. Thankfully, Jasmine was able to correct her friend’s trajectory and guided his hands to the ladder’s sides, which he clung to for dear life. Jasmine gave a loud cheer. “You did it! Way to go, Xant!” And she patted his shoulder. “Now we just have to get to the top! Did you want to go first?”
Once again, he looked at the human as though she were lacking in common sense.
“How do I ‘go first’? You’re clearly ahead of me!” Jasmine could only smile as she maneuvered so only one hand and arm were on the ladder, her body swaying in the open air, unafraid of the drop below. “There you go! Now you’re clear. I’ll make sure you don’t fall!”
Xant shuddered, flattened his ears and forced himself to climb up the ladder. He could almost feel the thin aluminum bars being crushed under the strength of the suit, but one step at a time he climbed higher. The top was open, no hatch or easy step, so he had to scramble his way over and landed with a thud. By comparison, he heard Jasmine’s light footsteps make quick work of the ladder, and she was soon helping him up to his feet. “Careful,” she teased “you’ll scuff the deck!” “Scuff the what?...” “Take off your helmet, you’ll see things clearer!”
Warily, Xant let the locks of his helmet click and examined his surroundings. It was an ‘open air room’, the floor layered like in his office, multiple steps divided for different purposes, with a deep pit made of what looked like blue plastic as the focal point of the main room. Jasmine threw her arms open. “Welcome aboard, matey!” she announced. “Enjoy the pool deck!” “Pool? Was this filled with water-” Xant took a step closer but his ears were tickled by the sound underfoot. He had assumed the floor would have been of the same steel or plastics the ship was composed of but no, underneath him, the entire floor was made of wood. The doctor spluttered, reaching down to the floor to feel it. There was more wood here than he had seen in his entire lifetime, and humans used it for *flooring. *
“Ooh yeah, nothing beats a pristine hardwood deck, that’s why I told you not to scuff it.” Jasmine smiled, walking towards the glass doors. “Let’s check inside! I wonder if everything is still here?” Xant followed her. The whole building catered to a human’s sensibilities. He would be stepping into a truly alien environment.
And it was beautiful.
He was welcomed to a room detailed with wood and gold, whose glass windows shimmered even in the dim light. Displaced furniture, long couches and tables made of wood, extravagantly painted cloth with the shimmer of arvas pupa silk gathered dust, their beauty was comparable to imperial belongings. He ran a finger over the cushions and inspected the thin layer. “Phew! What a mess. Help me clean it up a bit…” Jasmine began lifting up an over turned chair, sliding it into a corner with an almost innate knowledge of where everything should go. The chairs, a long couch and two armchairs had all been pushed into the corner of the room the tables had slid to either end. Xant was almost too scared to touch anything. “What should I do?” he asked, afraid to risk any delicate work.
“We’ll start by dusting off the chairs, then I’ll tell you where they go, okay?”
“Alright...”
The chairs were covered in a soft cushiony material. Xant couldn't stop brushing his hand over them as he delicately placed the furniture, and was dismayed when he saw none of them had a hole for his tail.
“I’ll need help with this!” Jasmine called. The space beneath a large window was taken up by a long lounge, on which Jasmine promptly plonked herself. “Oh my god…I missed cushions.” She patted the space beside her. “Don't be shy! Take a load off!” “Just a moment.” Xant tapped his suit. He couldn't contain himself in steel any longer, the temptation to feel his new environment was too great. The suit splayed open and he was able to step out of it onto fluffy, soft carpet.
Xant lost himself rubbing his feet on the soft fibers. First wood, now fabric? It was obscene!
His own carpet was a precious momento, why would humans consider a laborious resource worth turning into a construction material?
“Is something wrong, Xant?”
“The floor, is this a common fixture?”
“The carpet? I mean, the owner was a madman to have white carpet on a boat, but if you can afford something like this you’re not cleaning it yourself.” Jasmine shrugged. “Carpet’s not uncommon, but generally going out of style because it's so hard to keep clean.”
Xant was both relieved and perplexed by the answer.
“So the reason it is not more common is maintenance?”
“Yeah, keeping carpet, let alone white carpet clean is a nightmare,” Jasmine explained, happy to be talking about the mundanity. “If you think the carpet is amazing you should try out the couch here!” Xant looked over the seat. It appeared all human furniture had a tall back support, with no consideration for large tails such as his own. He did spy a more accommodating stool, however, with the same cushiony substance on top.
“I think this might be more appropriate.” He flipped over the stool and sat, comfortably, very comfortably. He let his body relax as he took in more of the surroundings through naked eyes. There were still so many things thrown about. Cleaning against the wall next to his seat Xant spied an intricately carved container. It was rectangular, heavy and for whatever reason, had uniform, pyramid-shaped protrusions on the outside decorative surely, but the design made it difficult for him to hold. He had to be very careful picking it up.
Jasmine's eyes lit up when he inspected the object more closely, opening the stopper to sniff the contents within.
It smelled of disinfectant.
“Oh my god, yes!”
The human scrambled off the couch and started rummaging through the shelves in the lonely island bench.
“Jasmine?”
“Ah ha!” she cried triumphantly, pulling out another uniquely shaped bottle. “Now this is going to be great!” She skipped over to Xant, picking up more glass rectangles, handed him an empty one and placed his original find on the table. She poured out an amber liquid, a drop in his glass and a more substantial pour in hers.
“What is it?” Xant asked.
“Old enough to vote,” she giggled, then closed her eyes and took a small sip before exhaling and shivering pleasantly. “This is...well, I'm guessing it's older now, but aged whisky, a.k.a, human alcohol.”
Xant wrinkled up his nose.
“Is it supposed to be this colour?”
“Yes! When you drink it, you can taste the oak barrels and honey. But I know you guys use this for disinfectant, so, you get a drop if you're brave.”
“Considering what it does to your physiology, I doubt my own constitution can handle it.”
“Shame.” She shrugged and took another sip.
Xant couldn't taste it, but watched as Jasmine melted into relaxation.
“Ahhh, like drinking warm silk,” she described.
He took a sniff of the sample she gave him.
It was woody and sweet, but the second sniff burnt the inside of his nostrils. Xant graciously placed the ‘drink’ down, while Jasmine chuckled at his reaction.
“Yeah it’s not a drink for a first timer, I think it gets even more potent the longer it sits… and who knows how long we were floating out there.”
“By my best estimates, it could be anywhere between 10 to 1000 [quarters]. Calculating in the unexplored regions of the system, what is currently reachable by galactic council gates and the limit of stasis pods.” Xant informed her.
Jasmine sat quietly for a moment, staring into her glass, before she threw back her head and the drink in one go.
“Whoooo!” She coughed. “Okay, we've seen this room, what else is there to explore!” She swayed getting to her feet, but charged forward anyway. Xant followed close behind, in case she lost her footing, or incase the alcohol began interfering with her Freq control.
The hallways connecting the chambers were very narrow, almost too narrow for him, and all of them had such sharp ascents and descents. The human led inside to one of the many inner chambers, each one as tossed around as the last. There was an entire ‘library’ of paper books, another room dedicated to the act of ‘entertaining’, featuring a destroyed dataslate the size of an operating table, and smaller ‘bedrooms’ that appeared just to be filled with more cushiony furniture.
“And here is the master bedroom.” Jasmine pushed open the ornate wooden doors to reveal yet another spectacular room, almost as large as the entertainment deck, but was sparsely furnished, all Xant could see was that it contained a bed with tables either side, but the bed was nothing short of magnificent. The tapestry stretched across it was nothing short of breathtaking, where giant intertwining flowers embroidered with gold thread sprawled across its majesty. He’d never seen anything as intricate made from pure cloth, the designs were simply beautiful.
“You really like that bedspread, huh?” Jasmine questioned. Xant ran his hand over the quilt, picking it up and feeling the weight of it, wondering what it was like to not be mesmerised by it all.
“Are humans always surrounded by such beauty?” he asked.
The question caught her off guard, and she looked around the room.
“Not always, but, at the same time, this is closer to what it’s like on earth than either the station or the base.” She held her arms wide as she took lazy steps across the room.
“Windows, pictures and paint on the walls, bedsheets and pillows...we like ‘beautiful’ surroundings.” She fell backward onto the large bed, rolling on the blankets and looking up at Xant. “You’ve got no excuse not to feel what the bed is like.”
Xant sighed, took a deep breath and mimicked Jasmine’s actions, letting himself flop forward onto the bed.
It was fluffy and soft.
“I think the sheet’s a genuine 1000 thread count too. Maybe I could make a proper cape out of this, huh?”
“It is absolutely fascinating that humans sleep on such luxury.”
“The lucky ones sleep on such luxury! But I do appreciate bedsheets after going without for so long.”
Her attention was shortening by the moment, as she rolled off the most comfortable place in existence to peek around a door.
“The ensuite!!” she squealed. “Oh Xant, you have to see what a real bathroom looks like!”
If the master bedroom was the most comfortable place in the world, then the ensuite was the most ornate. Xant couldn’t even identify what half the items were in the room, but they apparently all pertained to the simple act of grooming.
Long, wide mirrors lined one entire side of the room, double marble basins and chrome taps sat beneath them. Frosted glass windows, a bath big enough to fit four and a bidet decorated with gold made up the rest of the fixtures. Jasmine once again began rummaging through the shelves, making happy noises with every new discovery.
“Xant, hold out your hand!”
The doctor reluctantly did so, and Jasmine placed a small white blob in it. “Smell it!!” she insisted, fever in her eyes.
He took a quick and wary sniff, but the burning sensation he expected never came.
A fresh and vibrant perfume filled his senses, a sweetness he’d never known.
“It's jasmine hand cream! This is what my namesake smells like!” She dotted her entire arms with the cream and rubbed it into her skin.
“A moisturizer?”
“Yes! And here’s shampoo and conditioner, for hair, moisturizer, face cream, body wash, exfoliant, oh god please, oh please let the water be running!”
She dived for the taps to the bath, wrenching the handle as hard and as fast as it would go, but to no avail.
“Noooo,” she sobbed, hanging her head. “S’pose it was too good to be true, the water in the tanks would be dry…”
Xant curiously looked over the bathtub and jasmine could feel his freq overflowing with curiosity.
“So humans clean themselves in still water?”
“Well, soaking in the tub is fun, it's not exclusively how we clean ourselves, the shower is better for that.”
“So what is the difference between a human shower and our own?”
Jasmine pulled a disgruntled face.
“It’s the difference between a warm gentle rain and a cold pressure hose!” she exclaimed. “Oh, I wonder if we could get it running again…?” She absent mindedly lifted up a wicker basket, finding a few clothes the previous owners had left behind. “So, what do you think?” she asked, lifting a floral summer dress up over her figure.
“The patterns are beautiful, but, is it a cape?”
“No, it’s a dress! Hmmm, but I’d have to lose a few kilos for it to fit.”
“I beg your pardon?”
“Well, I’m a little bit bigger than the supermodel who stayed on this boat, but nothing a few weeks of exercise and diet couldn’t fix. Since there’s no junk food I really don’t have the excuse.”
“Are you not already in optimal condition?”
“Pfffft! No, god no.” She pulled at her stomach fat playfully. “Too much good food and junk food makes for chunky humans.”
“Junk food?”
Jasmine grinned ear to ear.
“Junk food, food that holds almost no nutritional value but is all about taste, glorious morsels of sugar, salt and colour dye.”
“There’s a chance sugar could be found aboard this vessel? We’d need to destroy it if there is any intact, its addictive nature can destroy a Sulins inhibition perminately.”
“Well if it’s going to be anywhere on the ship, it’ll be in the kitchen!”
They headed down to the bottom decks and stepped into a stainless steel wonderland. Jasmine was in her element, running her hand over the many pieces of specialised equipment as Xant watched on in wonder.
They found a perfectly polished kitchen, filled to the brim with human utensils, and all of it for the sole use of producing food. Jasmine lifted a book from the floor and brought it over to Xant.
“Here, this is what human food is supposed to look like.”
The graphical fidelity of the pictures was phenomenal, given that they weren’t on a computer screen, but the colours and shapes didn’t even seem similar to what he knew as ‘food’. He had seen sculptures that didn’t have dimensions nearly as interesting as those of the consumables depicted, and there was page after page of them, dish after dish, each one a work of art.
She showed him the variety of knives on display and the stupid amount of cutlery for eating said food. This was an entire industry to these people, the production and skill devoted to it was…
Garish.
Jasmine stood before a giant set of doors, her hands hovering over the handles.
“This is a refrigerator, we keep perishable goods inside… I wonder if anything is still…”
She jerked open the doors and they were both greeted with the foulest stench. The rotting and liquefied remains of meat and vegetables slopped onto the floor. Sealed inside the fridge, the smell had fermented to overpowering levels.
“Air!” Jasmine shouted as she scrambled past Xant. “I need air!”
They ran up several stairs to escape the toxic gas and were able to breathe a sigh of relief once above deck. They appeared to have come out the other side, more couches and pools littering the area Jasmine made her way across to get to the bow of the ship.
She walked to its peak, then climbed over the safety railing to hold the spearhead.
Puffing out her chest and throwing her arms open, she proclaimed for the entire engineering wing to hear,
“I’M ON A BOAT, I’M ON A BOAT! TAKE A GOOD HARD LOOK AT THE MOTHER FUCKING BOAT!”
An echo of uproarious laughter soon followed suit, a joke Xant wasn’t privy to, then Jasmine climbed back to join him.
“You know, I think I’m done for the moment. I need a break from all this excitement…”
She flopped herself down on one of the sunbeds, and Xant stood over her.
“Jasmine, I’ve been meaning to ask...”
“Go ahead?”
“All of this, it’s wonderful, but it’s nothing like the memory you shared with me. All this is pure opulence. Your memory was far more humble and comforting…”
“Well, that’s because this is a superyacht, and not a lower-income one bedroom apartment…” The human shrugged.
“So, what measure of wealth allows people to live such drastically different lives?”
“... I, dunno know, they're mostly owners of companies, corporations, kings, queens, people who run economies…”
“What expertise defines their worth to be that much more than yours?” Xant asked pointedly.
Jasmine faltered for an answer. While she could throw around words like investment portfolios and trust funds, she didn't actually understand the system as well as she would have liked.
“They study finance, have rich parents, inherited gold mines…luck, I guess? There’s many different ways to get there.”
“So, every human has the chance to attain this level of contribution credit?”
“No…”
“That doesn’t seem fair,” Xant remarked, finally lying down beside her. Jasmine stared up at the steel enclosed ceiling, reflecting.
“No it’s not, but it’s getting better,” she replied. “Slowly but surely, it's getting better.”

This was my auth double flap that I sold to a friend a year ago, thus this GF purchase. Sold it to fund my holy grail bag.
I didnot put a caption as to which of them is the auth and rep, I would love for you to guess. :) Let’s see if you can get it right.

Quality - 9.75/10

Pros:
I can still remember when I first opened my package a year ago. The wave of giddiness sweeping over me, a little anxious coz I still do not know if I will be a victim of "expectation vs reality", a lot of "what ifs";
What if the PSPs are just too good to be true? What if my bag is not as good as the bags they reviewed? What if this bag won’t meet my standards,
all these absurd questions started clouding my silly mind while I was trying my best to remove the tapes and carefully cutting the box w/o damaging what’s inside.
You see, first purchase is the most crucial step in the process because it will make or break your rep buying experience. Your next shopping activity will always rely on your first purchase/experience.
My jaw dropped when I saw the bag, I immediately grabbed it, sniffed it, inspected it and hugged it (but not so tight, of course). Boy was I impressed! I was amazed! I was inlove!!! (That same feeling whenever you see Chris Hemsworth topless, good heavens!)
  • NO Fufu smell. It actually smelled like a regular leather bag. I collect luxury handbags/ items and I can say that every brand has different smell. (That’s my super power; Powerful sense of smell). This one does not smell like a chanel of course but nobody will sniff your bag. Not even a passing dog.
  • Made of real leather, perfect alignment and very neatly stitched.
  • Durable and very good quality. You get what you paid for.
  • The hardware looks luxurious, has the same gold shade as my authentic and has a weight on it. I am convinced that the gold plating is thicker on this one, being a premium version, the hardware is still shiny and smooth after a year. No rusting at all. This baby has fell and stumbled on the floor more than my toddler but had always stood up gracefully. Without any broken parts or scratches. 😆😅
Cons:
  • The twisting of gold chain is making me crazy. This also happens in authentics but it is just so annoying. Like I need to fix them first before taking photos of this baby! So time consuming. Lols! (-.25)

Accuracy - 9.15/10

Pros:
  • The comparison photos says it all! I was able to trick my husband and sister, they pointed my GF double flap as the authentic! That made me so happy!
  • I love the puffiness! Auth has puffy batches so this is not an issue on accuracy. After almost a year, the puffiness is still the same as when she arrived, maybe because I do not use it regulary. GF has very nice and neat stitching. The auth has 9 to 11 stitches per diamond depending on the batch. The GF has 8 to 9 stiches per diamond which makes the bag puffier. I decided to put it here on the Pros coz I prefer puffier bag. Besides, nobody will ever come to inspect your bag holding a magnifying glass to check and count the stitches when you wear it outside. It is a matter of preference anyway. So I won't be deducting points here. :)
  • This Gf leather does not need any conditioner at all!! See how shiny and luxurious the leather is! Just like how i have always hoped my hair would be! Ugh!
  • Correct measurements (15.5x25.5x6.5cm). Perfect alignment, even the grommets. The Mona Lisa Pocket has the right shape and size.
  • The Gold harware has the same shine, weight and color as the authentic.
  • The burgundy leather inside the bag is the same as the auth.
  • GHW is as shiny and luxurious as the auth and has the right coloshade. The hardware's stamping is crisp and nice!
Cons:
  • The Chanel gold stamping (inside) is neat and flawless, no smudges at all, but it is thinner than the auth. The authentic stamping is boldethicker. (-.25)
  • Gf's leather is thick and luxurious but the auth caviar is slightly deeper. Gf's caviar is slightly shallow on the front and back part of the bag, but the inner flap's caviar and the bottom is on point. Maybe because the leather on those parts where too stretched out due to puffiness of the quilting. You won't be able to know it unless you touch both bags, and nobody will dare to touch your bag, unless you allow them to, so I am deducting just a tiny bit here (-.10)
  • The hologram sticker’s cc logo print is bolder, and the zipper's leather tab (on the flap) is very slightly thinner and longer on the rep. Nobody will see and notice this except you, so I am deducting just a little. (-.25)
  • The serial number’s font on rep is not the same as my auth flap. The font should be rounder. (.-25)
but i do have other authentic chanel bags that has the same number font. (Different style)

Satisfaction - 10/10

Just a little story, to ladies who are afraid of being repshamed.
Shopping is my cardio and my favorite hobby. When I am sad, I buy shoes. Whenever I'm angry, I buy jewelries, when I am happy, I buy bags. (I am such a jolly person so imagine how many bags I buy.lol). Me and my husband love fancy things, a match made in heaven, and we live luxuriously. Joining this sub and virtually meeting you ladies, is a blessing to me. I have bought A LOT of stuffs since I joined a year ago, saved great amount of money and most importantly, satiated my addiction in designer items. Yes, I can, and still buy authentic items but the satisfaction, the excitement and thrill that the reps and the process (from comparing the bags to auth, losing sleep when checking TS' yupoos and moments, exercising your brain cells during qc, the excitement of receiving the PSPs, the thrill of waiting for the package and worrying about Dave) is such an adventure! Than the usual, calling my SA or personal shoppers to get the bag that I want. Now, my collection has grown and it is a mix of auth 70% and reps 30%. I rock my reps with confidence, always! Nobody ever questioned em.
One day, I had a small talk with some girls over tea, (my friend's acquaintances). I was wearing this classic flap from God factory (who received a lot of admirations, of course they do not know it's a rep) they talked about how they admire my style and luxury collection, butt kissing me, and then they started saying a lot of nasty things about people buying and wearing reps, how fake and poor those ladies who wear them. And that those women who buy reps are bitches who just wants to be accepted in the society where they don't belong, should buy f21 bags instead! The nerve of these b*tches!!! They were wearing very old and scrappy Lv bags in Rank C condition!! (Those bags want to rest in peace already, for heaven's sake!) I laughed so hard on their comments. When I was done laughing, I looked at their bags and up to their faces and said, "But darlings, you shoud've bought premium reps instead of those dying, old Lvs". They awkwardly laughed with me thinking that I was joking. Called the attendant and said, "The bill's on me!". (Coz they should save their effin money so they could buy a presentable, nice condition, pre owned bag. I bet my reps are more expensive than their bags!!). Now, who says repladies are cheap and poor??! Ps: did some digging and learned that those girls do not even own any auth designer items (aside from those dying LVs). 🤦‍♀️
Repshaming judgemental biatches! Haha!
Also wore this glorious bag to Chanel boutiques on some of my vacays abroad, even put it side by side to an auth flap. Nobody thought it's a rep.
This bag has gone through some concerts and falls to the ground. She stood up graciously after every fall. Lols! That is how durable this bag is! And extra points for me for being so bad ass (whenever other people see my classic flap fall so hard on the floor and I am still relaxed af!)
It's not the bag ladies, it's your confidence! That's the key to success! 😉
SO, WHO'S THE REP AND WHO'S THE AUTHENTIC?? the rep is the one with ❤ And the authentic is the one with 🌸
Give yo selves a gentle tap on the back if you got it right! 👏

SELLER COMMUNICATION 8.5/10

Linda was a darling. No, she’s not talkative and not a story teller. She’s a one-question-one-answer type of person and I like it. She converses only in Chinese but very easy to talk to. Google translate would be your bestfriend. I deducted points because I specifically asked her to put a receipt on the box/parcel. I even told her the things that she’ll put/write on the receipt and the amount of each bags for customs declaration. She said yes and promised to follow my request. I repeated it a lot of times even on the day when she shipped my orders. All the while, I thought she did what I asked her, had issues with my package, clearly she didnot honor my requests. Luckily, I was able to pull some strings and the package was successfully sent to me.

Restoring/repairing an older quilt

I have a quilt that was made for me, about 60 years ago, by my paternal grandmother. It needs some TLC, and after much thought and inspection, I have formulated a plan, but want to run it past people here for a sanity check (in case you see me going at this the wrong direction).
Existing situation … The batting in the quilt is moderately heavy. The binding has worn thru in many places, but both the back and the top are in relatively good condition. Where the binding has worn thru, and the batting exposed, is seems to be rough cotton. Not raw cotton, but something with a rough, and slightly irregular, texture. The perimeter of the quilt is approximately 300", and it appears to be close to a queen size.
The way she made this quilt was to use a large single piece of fabric for the back, then wrapped it around to use the far edges for the binding, tucked the unfinished edge under the binding. and manually stitched that edge to the top. As the back is in good condition (other than where it wraps as binding). I am going to leave the back untouched (unless I see some of the old cotton thread coming unstitched, where I will manually mend those stitches).
The entire front was done in nine-patches on point. The finished size of each nine-patch (when measured as a straight side) is 6 1/4". The squares in the middle of the nine-patch appear to be 2" on each side. Each nine-patch has five blocks of plaid and four blocks of a solid color, that compliments some lines in the plaid. Alternating blocks, and side triangles, were made from the same solid lavender material. So the theme is nine-patches on point, with regular lavender between the nine-patches. Other than one or two small stains, the top is in good condition. There are a few threads (maybe 5-8) where the thread has failed at the junction of patches within a nine-patch. I intend to manually mend them by hand. Otherwise, the top will be left intact.
The binding is the main focus of the repair. As the original binding was a continuation of the back fabric, there is no specific point where the original binding began on the back side. I can see a row of stitches (when I look carefully) that she used to establish and hold it, before she wrapped it around the edge and attached the top. I am intending to leave all the worn binding in place, and lay a new binding on top of it. Because of the age, I will not attempt to machine stitch the new binding to the quilt. Where some of the batting may have fell off (maybe 3 or 4 spots, typically an inch long) I am planning on putting cotton balls in to make the binding have a continuous even edge.
The replacement binding will be fabricated from batik. I have obtained a quantity (more than enough) of a maroon print with small flowers. I intend to cut it into 3 1/4" strips, then miter sew them (on a machine) so that I end up with about 310" of continuous material. With some luck, I can miter the material together in such a way that the flower patterns will overlap, and hid the assembly points. The raw length of 8 strips is 336" but I'll lose some to the miter assembly and to the selvage (assuming the I need to rip that). I will also lose a little to the four corners on the existing quilt, when I miter them.
The reason I'm planning to cut 3 1/4" rather than 2 1/2" has to do with the way she wrapped the back fabric around, and hand stitched it to the front. The width of the old binding edge (to the top) varies between 3/4" and 1". Since I don't want to start pulling the old fabric off, I'm going to need a new binding where I can flex the width as I'm going to allow it to cover (as close as possible) to the existing. If I tried making it 1" all the way around, it would begin to cover up the outer edge of the nine-patches. A few of them lost 1/8" during the original assembly some 60 years ago. Those I'll leave intact, but not make this any worse than it is. The new binding will be hand stitched.
So that's the most I can think of to describe what I am about to embark upon. If anyone has tips or suggestions (or even criticism) lay it on me.
Thanks in advance for reading this far.

Buying a weighted blanket from Amazon was the worst decision I’ve ever made.

You’ve heard of them. They started as a tool to help calm autistic people and people with anxiety and insomnia. Over the past few years they’ve grown into a popular household item, and with good reason. They’re comforting.
We’d pay just about anything for some comfort. Do you ever notice how that’s most of what we spend our money on now, us single guys? Why do we constantly crave to be comforted?
My life wasn’t particularly uncomfortable. Not then. I had finally gotten back track with reality after the disappearance of my wife and kids two years ago. I’d sold our little house in the suburbs, gotten a cheap apartment close to my job, attended all the therapy appointments the police and caseworkers recommended, and gone back to work. I still couldn’t sleep for more than an hour or two a night, even with the medications they gave me, but that was okay. The worst of it was over. Shock and grief can only last so long.
I got one anyway; ordered the thing off Amazon. In queen size, like all my bedding, even though my queen no longer slept in it.
It arrived ridiculously late. I’m a Prime member, and I selected the free two day shipping. But it at least had gotten there, so I didn’t send a complaint, despite the state it was in after its long journey - not in the familiar smiley cardboard box, but in a shapeless lump haphazardly placed halfway on my front doorstep, halfway in the parking lot. It had been clumsily wrapped in brown paper and tied with a string, and possibly kicked the whole way here, from the look of it.
“It’s like a quaint, rustic thing,” I announced (to nobody in particular) as I dragged it into my apartment. “A present from grandma, back home, uh, on the ranch!”
But even talking to myself couldn’t convince me. It looked like a bomb, delivered straight off the set of an action movie. The package was beaten up, stained, and the rough jute string was frayed and nearly falling apart. It looked singed in several places, too. It took me two hours, three gin and tonics, and a hearty microwave dinner to work up enough courage (or suicidal depression) to actually open the thing.
The blanket was bundled into a poorly-folded cube, held together by another length of the same string that had bound the paper. I wasn’t impressed with its packaging, but the blanket itself looked alright - plush, quilted blue microfiber with thick seams - and felt like it was the right weight. It smelled normal; you know that clean but vaguely chemical-ish odor new blankets have.
I checked the tag, wondering if I ought to clean it, but the ink was smeared and blurry. It seemed risky to throw it in the washing machine without knowing the correct settings to use, so I just threw it over my duvet and went about my business.
At around midnight I decided to give it a try. I had nothing left to lose; I’d spent hundreds of dollars on my bed over the past few months; the newest and best quality memory-foam adjustable cooling mattress, thousand count Egyptian cotton sheets, customizable-filling pillows, and none of it had brought me a single good night’s sleep. Honestly I expected the same to happen that night, but it was fun to pretend.
I slid between the cool sheets and pulled the blankets up over me. The new blanket was a bit lumpy, but I knew from reading reviews that this was normal due to shipping, and would smooth out over time. The weight was immediately noticeable, and to my surprise, I felt...comforted.
When I closed my eyes, I imagined my youngest two had crawled into bed with us, and were laying on top of me, suppressing giggles as they tried not to wake me up. An artfully folded section of the blanket at my back became the familiar bulk of my wife beside me, and when I opened my eyes again it was ten in the morning and I was late for work.
I’ve never been so thrilled to receive a write-up.
That weird chemical smell didn’t really fade, though, and gradually it became more noticeable. By the end of the week I could smell (or imagined I could) the strange, neutral odor on my skin, even after a shower. By the end of the month, it had become unbearable.
I took it to a dry cleaners, thinking that I’d been lazy because I was so enamored over my renewed relationship with sleep. I was ready for the elderly Korean woman behind the counter to judge me over the stink. I had my excuses rehearsed; work was crazy, I’d had it in my car and forgotten, and I’d had Indian food for lunch and forgotten the leftovers in my car over the weekend, which had amplified the smell.
But I didn’t have a chance to recite this story. She only waved a handheld metal detector over my blanket and said, “Filling wrong. Can’t clean. Try spray with Fabreeze! You can get on Amazon!”
I couldn’t imagine what about the filling could be wrong, and I told her so. Sure it was still a bit clumpy from shipping, but Amazon had listed the filler as polypropylene, and all the reviews recommended dry-cleaning.
“Metal,” she explained, then shooed me out the door with twenty pounds of smelly quilt in my arms.
Another month of beautiful, comfortable sleep went by before I couldn’t live with the smell anymore. People had begun to comment on it at work. Megan, my manager, had tactfully suggested I check my laundry machine to see if maybe a rat had gotten in there and died or something. That was my last straw.
I came home determined to get rid of the blanket and buy a new one. But you know what happens when you lose your entire world, with no answers? You start to cling to things. You hoard them. Because you can’t lose the comfort they bring you.
I tried six dry cleaners before I found one who spoke enough English (through a heavy Boston accent; but you can’t have everything) to explain it to me.
“Sometimes they fill these with glass beads,” he said. “The factories that make the beads, they‘ll lose a screw or some metal filings in the batch, and it all goes into the blanket. Machines in factories, you get me? Yeah, so what you can do is cut the seam a little and dump the balls into a bucket or the bathtub or something. Throw the blanket in the wash, hang it up to dry. Then you just pour ‘em back in and sew it up.”
I told him I didn’t know how to sew.
“You can get a funnel off Amazon for a few bucks,” he said, and shrugged at me in a particularly apathetic sort of way before turning back to a pile of stained panties.
I did exactly that. They took a week to ship it, which was annoying, but it was a bank holiday that Monday so the delay made sense.
Armed with my funnel and a bucket, I pulled the edge of the blanket over the bed and cut a tiny hole into the seam near the corner. I expected the beads to come pouring out in a clattery flood as soon as I dropped the corner into the bucket. Instead there was a single, loud thump as a lump of something metallic hit the plastic.
I peered into it and saw a gold circle. A wedding ring with a fingerprint carved into it, and an inscription on the inside that I couldn’t see because a chunk of meat and bone were still inside it, but I knew what it said. It said “to love’s eternal glory”. It was my fingerprint on the band.
My mind went blank and I lost control of my legs, forcing me to sit heavily on the edge of my bed. The motion tugged the blanket over another few inches, and more of the filling came out. This wasn’t a flood, it was more of a...heave, like the blanket was vomiting up pieces of crumbling, dry flesh and bone. Like a cyst being squeezed, thick clumps of horribly recognizable stuff squirted out into the bucket. My oldest son’s teeth clattered loudly against the sides, and I saw flashes of silvery fillings from the cavities caused by gum disease he’d inherited from his mom.
There was a scrap of almost-bleached-white Hello Kitty band-aid wrapped around a tiny knuckle joint, and I remembered how my daughter had scraped her finger knocking loudly on her brother’s splintered bedroom door, and how she’d smiled through her tears when she saw the special, fun band-aid her daddy had put over the scratch.
I’d been sleeping for two months beneath the heavy weight of a thousand mummified pieces of my wife and children’s bodies.
The cops couldn’t trace the package, even though they tried. The security cameras in my apartment complex showed an unmarked brown van with no license plate, which dumped the package directly from the window onto my front step. There was nothing to track.
Amazon’s lawyers provided evidence proving they’d packed and shipped the correct (boxed and labeled) blanket. Let me be fair to them; I must say that they offered me a prompt refund.
In store credit.
But I won’t be buying anything off Amazon ever again. I’ve gotten rid of my Echo; that was the first thing I threw out, along with all my new bedding, and I canceled my Prime membership. Just for good measure, I threw out my smartphone and smartwatch as well. Amazon and smart technology are convenient and that’s great, but it’s not worth the risk if things like this can happen.
It’s the only possible explanation, after all - how else could they have found the bodies?

Measurement Advice for First Quilt!!

I am trying to make a queen sized quilt with simple squares for my first project.
What size should the squares be and how many should I need?
I’m having trouble finding a pattern online to help me with this. Maybe I’m just looking in the wrong places.
Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks :)

Advice please! Cutting long quilt borders accurately

Hi all, I'm a beginner quilter and an intermediate sewer. I'm working on my biggest quilt yet. It's a queen. I've added borders before so I know how to measure the quilt and the process for attaching the borders.
I'm worried about the accuracy of measuring and cutting the border before attaching it to the quilt. This size (92" x 7") is ungainly!
I've tried looking it up online or in my quilting library but as you can imagine most of the advice is on how to measure the quilt or attach the borders. The middle step is mostly "cut your fabric lengthwise" or "cut strips, attach them together and trim to length".
What do you do to cut long borders and keep them accurate? Any and all practical methods are welcome! Both best practice ("this is what your supposed to do") and practical solutions ("this what works for me") most welcome. 😁

[REVIEW] Chanel CF 25cm M/L, Black GHW, 187 King Caviar, Heidi GB

Book incoming. I sincerely apologize. NOT! XD

Info

Timeline

Photos
My standard is this auth comparison provided by a fellow replady as well as several other sources online. I will say that 187 has improved their accuracy since the above pictures were taken in March this year. I had to really, reaaaalllly look on purpose to find any "mistakes", and to be honest some of the points I'm dinging are totally arbitrary.
Caveat: I do not have an auth next to me to do a side by side comparison so maybe there are other inaccuracies that I haven't seen. That being said, even auths vary slightly from year to year so I doubt these are problems that can't be passed off as a "seasonal discrepancy".

Quality – 9.25/10

Accuracy 9.5/10, and this is after I'm being mean

Satisfaction – 100/10
This was my very first rep and I'm sooo impressed. Actually, this is my very first luxury good in general. I've seen luxury bags belonging to other people before but never bought one. And yes, I count this rep as a luxury bag. Even if it's a rep, it's a high-tier rep that cost me close to $600, which is as much as an auth Gucci. In my mind, this one is not simply "as good as" the real thing, it is the real thing.
I've brought it into Bloomingdale's, Saks, etc. and let me tell you I could feel the crowds of people parting before me like the sea before Moses. I was treated like a queen. Or maybe they were treating me normally but I certainly felt like a queen, haha. Although I've had strangers do the impressed "ooh, that's the purse I want someday" thing to me. Maybe that's just the general way the designer purse community views Chanel or Hermes.
As for the purse itself, it serves me well. This is less of a rep thing and more of the general Chanel design. I'm pretty minimalist so this size is perfect for what I need to carry. The interior of this purse is actually pretty tiny though. Here's what fits in each part.
The caviar is nice and sturdy, and the chain is the perfect drop length for single shoulder carry but a little too short for crossbody (I'm 5'3"). The only thing I find slightly annoying is that the flap on new bags is a little hard to open at first, but I suppose that's a tradeoff I'm willing to live with if it thicker leather and better structure for my bag.

Seller Communication and Service – 10/10
Heidi was so nice and responsive. I'm afraid I was one of those annoying customers; I kept asking her for extra photos in my PSPs and we went back and forth a couple times. But she never complained or got annoyed and always gave me what I asked for.
I know many people had trouble getting ahold of her and were waiting days for a reply but I never had that problem. She always responded to me within a few days. Sometimes immediately. I will say that I rarely initiated contact with her. The first time was when I was placing my order, the second time when I asked her if the payment went through. I mostly communicated via Outlook email. I also made sure to time my emails and WeChat messages – I'd send them based on China time (between 10am–2pm over there), not my time.
I also greatly appreciated her packaging. She wrapped the whole box in styrofoam and wrapped that in several layers of tape. The box arrived undamaged and beautiful. I also greatly appreciated the provided Chanel packaging, with the magnetic box, the shopping bag, the dust bag, ribbon, flower, the info cards and booklets, everything. I didn't research the authenticity and accuracy of the packaging much, and frankly I don't care. The fact that they're providing this stuff at all to give me the full experience makes me so happy. If I got this from 187 or a real Chanel boutique I wouldn't be able to tell the difference.

Quilting with an 1/8" seam?

Question: can I quilt with 1/8" seams and will they hold up to daily use?
Long story: I had bought a quilt kit from craftsy 2 years ago to make a queen size quilt for my bed, but was too intimated to start it until recently. After spending hours trying to accurately cut over 2,500 pieces (many with weird measurements like 2 3/8" square cut on the diagonal into triangles), I finally started piecing today and it immediately all went to shit.
My first block is square within a square and the pattern says the "unfinished block should measure 3 1/2" x 3 1/2". I do a test and it comes out almost a full 1/4" short. I try again, making sure I place everything correctly, making sure my seam is exactly 1/4" (as per the pattern) and pressing. Exactly the same result.
I tried one with an 1/8" seam and can just barely get the right size (need to be very careful when pressing otherwise it'll get wonky and won't work), but I'm worried this will not hold up to continuous use.
Because it's a kit, I only had just enough fabric for the pieces, so I don't have any extra to recut bigger pieces.
I'm so frustrated!! I sent a help request to craftsy, but can't really fault them if they can't help me, because I bought it so long ago, and the pattern and kit are now discontinued.
Any advice?
For reference, this is the quilt I am trying to make: https://www.corasquilts.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/Rev1-600x450.jpg

An attempt at a Mattress FAQ

Hey all! I thought I'd take a few minutes today and attempt a draft at a mattress FAQ. This is something I've meant to do for quite a while, but haven't found the time for due to life events and exhaustion. Some of that exhaustion has come from sleeping on a few terrible mattresses over the last few years in grad school, and I don't want anyone else to go through that same situation. I have no experience in the industry itself, although I have done literal years of research and spoken with coil, foam, and mattress manufacturers in person and on the phone. Some of what you'll read here is pretty much the party line and similar to what you'll find on The Mattress Underground, and some of it is my opinion. I'll mark areas that are less evidence-based and more my opinion as such. So... without further ado.

What's the best mattress? Let's start here. There isn't one. Certainly some mattresses are better than others, but what works for you might not work for someone else. I'm sure you've had the experience of sleeping rather well on a poor quality mattress in a hotel or motel, and you may have also had the rather unpleasant experience of sleeping poorly on a very expensive mattress in your own home. So rather than ask "what's the best mattress?" let's instead consider the more useful question - "how do you find the right mattress for you?" And to find that mattress, you need to consider two things. First, what do you find comfortable? And second, is the mattress you're considering made of quality materials?

So how do I find something that's comfortable? The easiest way to find a comfortable mattress is to go into a local store and try out a few beds. I would strongly recommend finding a local manufacturer rather than a big name store, as local manufacturers typically use more durable materials and at better prices. You might find that you like the classic feel of a traditional innerspring mattress, or the slightly more conforming feel of a pocketed coil system. You might also enjoy the feel of an all foam bed. If nothing (or everything) feels comfortable to you, then I'd advise you to consider what you've slept well on in the past. This might give you a clue as to what works well for your body. I generally prefer an alternating coil innerspring (a slightly more conforming traditional innerspring) or a pocketed coil mattress. I've slept well on some foam mattresses, but I generally find these to be too warm. Once you have an idea of what you like, then it's time to evaluate each mattress for it's quality.

And how do I evaluate a mattress for its quality? Mattress quality is primarily determined by the quality of its two main components: the quality of the support system and the quality of the comfort layers. The support system for most mattresses is typically a spring system or a layer of dense foam (typically polyfoam or latex). Other more exotic support systems do exist (such as wool, water, or air), but these are much less common. Comfort layers are typically much softer foams (either polyfoam, memory foam, or latex) or much softer coil systems (called microcoils). Some other comfort layers include gel matrixes, wool, or cotton batting. So for simplicity's sake let's break this discussion into two parts: foam quality and spring quality.

What are quality foams? This is the easiest part of evaluating a mattress and is usually what people take away from the Mattress Underground. Generally, quality is determined by the density of the foam as measured by pounds per cubic foot (lb/pcf) as denser foams are more durable and retain their "showroom feel" for longer. For ease of understanding I'll break these down into three categories.

And what are quality spring systems? This is slightly more complicated. There are a lot of spring systems and it's difficult to predict how they will interact with the comfort layers and your body type. Unlike foam layers, almost all of these are considered very durable as most use steel or titanium components. However, low coil count units can still provide inadequate support despite the quality of their material components. As a rule of thumb, check the manufacturer's website (typically Leggett and Platt) for that particular coil unit and ensure that the count is on the medium to high end for said unit.

So it's as easy as finding an adequate support unit and high quality foams, right? Well, no. And this is the maddening thing about finding a mattress, but... quality does not always mean comfort. Quality certainly suggests comfort, but it doesn't guarantee it. Many online mattresses are built from quality, durable materials (it's how they convince you to make that purchase sight unseen), but that doesn't mean they will be comfortable for you. Quality is easy and comfort is complicated. What you want to do is find something that's comfortable for you AND has quality materials. Which is harder than it sounds...

What if I buy a mattress made of lower quality materials? Or, in other words, what if I buy an "S-brand" mattress? This is a riskier proposition, but one that I totally understand. I've lived in places where my only options were buying sight unseen from the internet or buying an "S -brand" bed of potentially unknown materials.* While S-brand's spring systems are generally solid, most of their comfort materials are on the lower range (1.0-1.5lb/pcf polyfoams; or < 4.0lb/pcf memory foams) and will quickly develop a "thinner and flatter" feel within a few months. If the mattress you're buying is a pillowtop, then this breaking in process can feel like a rapid loss of support and lead to an uncomfortable "sink" in the middle of the bed. Conversely, rapid softening of the comfort materials can also allow you to engage with the support system more easily and thus increase the support of the mattress. So it's complicated. I would generally avoid S-brands if you can.
*And if you want to peek at the S-brand materials, try this website: https://www.jordans.com/content/sleep-lab/about-our-brands/jordans-mattress-factory. For some reason, they disclose the rather sub-optimal foam densities of the major manufacturers. Also the sub-optimal foam densities of their own beds...

Why do the big brands use lower quality materials? I don't really know. I suspect this is due to cost-cutting and an attempt to maximize profits with repeat mattress purchases. It could also be due to market testing and the fact that denser, higher quality foams have a longer "break-in" and feel stiffer in a showroom? Or possibly due to the increased "tackiness" and friction of higher quality foams impeding the body's push through the comfort materials (something you'll notice if you order a little foam yourself and play around with it)? I just don't know. I want to say it's just greed, but it could be due to nuanced engineering that I don't completely understand.

What about cooling technologies? Should I pay for somnigel with cloudburst technology? Ugh. This is mostly marketing. Cooling technologies can provide some benefit, but this is typically short-lived and lasts only a few hours (although a significant amount of phase-change material is possibly the one exception here and stands on firm physical/chemical principles). You're better off keeping your bedroom cool with air-conditioning or looking at a mattress with a spring system for increased airflow. Otherwise, diamond-dust? High molecular weight yarn? Gel? Whatever, it doesn't really do much.

Okay but seriously what's the coolest mattress? I mean, the coolest mattress is probably the one you're on because you're a cool person. Okay sorry. What matters here is airflow. The coolest mattress will be the one that maximizes airflow through the base and comfort materials. Latex and polyfoam both have relatively large open-celled structures and do a reasonable job of allowing airflow for comfort materials. Memory foam is a mixed bag. Older, denser memory foams were notoriously bad with airflow due to the cell structure and the overall enveloping feel of the bed. People would sink deeply into this old style memory foam and create a sort of petrochemical cocoon of poorly breathable material and then wake up covered in sweat. Some newer memory foams do have larger cell structures and do a better job with airflow, but this isn't well advertised and it can be tough to know if the memory foam you're looking at will breathe or not. So there is a trade-off. As for base materials... springs will generally be the best for airflow. I mean, they are 99% air by volume.

Do I need a boxspring? Maybe. Although I would point out that there are few true boxsprings nowadays. Most are instead wood or wire grid foundations with no actual springs in them. Neither are truly necessary as most mattress do well on a totally flat foundation (like plywood or the floor), but these wood or wire grid foundations can actually soften the feel of a bed just a touch in my experience. Particularly so on a pocketed coil mattress. Whether this is good or bad is up to you. Generally, most wire grid foundations provide sufficient support, although there's so much variance in these frames that it's possible there are some lower quality systems out there. If you're considering a wooden slatted foundation, then I'd recommend looking at slats at least two inches wide and not more than three inches apart. Some mattresses can still do well if these slats are further apart, but most foam mattresses need the consistent support of closely spaced slats. Finally, you can also place 3/4" plywood or a bunkie board to convert a bedframe into a flat foundation. You should also know that placing your mattress on a flat foundation like plywood (or even the floor) can diminish airflow and lead to the development of mold, although I have never had this problem personally.

My mattress is bowing in the middle. What should I do? This isn't ideal. I would suspect that this is due to softening of low quality comfort materials. My first bit of advice would be to place it on a firmer surface (either a flat foundation or the floor) and see if that helps. If not, then you might try to place a small cardboard "shim" under the middle of the bed. A durable cardboard sheet will be about a 1/4 inch in thickness and can provide a surprising amount of zoned support to that area. Still doesn't help? Well, you can always deconstruct the mattress and replace the comfort materials. Chances are the support materials are still good, so if you strip the existing comfort materials and replace those, you might have a brand new mattress. If not... well, then at least you've tried.

What about this new bed in a box online? I don't even know. I'm very very tired of the online mattress game. They all promise the best sleep ever and... I just don't think that most deliver on that. Further, if the bed doesn't work for you then there's a good chance it could wind up in a landfill. And many online reviewers are little more than online salespeople with almost every mattress getting a 4 or 5 star review. I'm sick of the whole thing to be honest. If you find one you're interested in, then great! Evaluate it like any other bed, but be aware if it doesn't work it may not get "recycled" like the company promises. Again, it's entirely possible an online mattress could be a great fit for you, but it's a shot in the dark unless you can try it first. And if you want us to take a look and help you make a decision, please provide the relevant specs via the foam densities and coil unit/gauge.

So how do I put this all together? Good question. Let's take a look at a few examples.

Do mattresses have a break-in period? Yes. But this is poorly understood by most salespeople and may not have been well explained to you. Both polyfoam and memory foam are a bit stiff starting out. This "false firmness" (a term I believe coined by Phoenix on the Mattress Underground) can take a week or two to relax, after which you'll get the true foam feel of the bed. However, a mattress break in isn't just in the foam layers. Over a few weeks, the fabric and stitching of the mattress will also start to relax. The combination of these two processes typically leads to a softer feel within a 30 day period, although with some mattresses (particularly those with very very firm support systems) a softening of the upper comfort materials can actually make the mattress feel harder as you contact the support system sooner. Sound complicated? It is, unfortunately. I should also mention that, in my experience, most coil systems will relax very very slightly after a few months of use, although this is debated within the industry.

Do I have a break-in period? You do. This is the period in which your body loses it's "learned alignment" (again, a term I believe coined by Phoenix on the Mattress Underground) and adjusts to a new mattress. This learned alignment is probably the learned resting muscle tone of the muscles in your back and spine. Over time, these muscles learn to relax on a new sleep surface and you begin to sleep more deeply. There's no way that I know of to speed this process up, although heavy exercise or yoga could certainly help. You could also just try a new mattress that's very similar to your old mattress.

Should I purchase an all latex bed? This is complicated. Latex is supremely durable (and for some, supremely comfortable), but it is a *very* distinct feel and not for everyone. As such, it's difficult for me to make an off the cuff recommendation for latex because of its unique properties. For a bit of education, there are two large categories of latex: that created with the Talalay process and that created with the Dunlop process. Each type also has a unique feel. I personally prefer Dunlop latex, but I think I'm in the minority here. Others have also claimed that Talalay is generally superior and more durable, but I've not seen evidence for this. If you're interested in latex try to find a store wherein you can lay down and try it first. That said, if you like it then bam! You've got a mattress that could last 20 years.

How do I make a mattress softer? This is easy. You can soften a mattress by making sure it's broken in, adding a topper, or by placing it on a proper foundation. Gently walking on a mattress can speed the break-in process, but I'd take care not to jump or be too aggressive if you're a heavier person. Adding a topper is the tried and true method, but be aware that certain intangible factors related to your topper can make a big difference in how it feels on your mattress. A too thick topper can throw your body out of alignment, and sometimes high quality toppers can "drag" on the quilt of your mattress creating an odd "firmer" feel due to the friction of these materials working together. Lastly, adding a semiflex foundation (the typical wire grid) or an actual working boxspring can actually soften your mattress slightly. All of these are worth a shot if your bed is too firm.

How do I make a mattress firmer? This is difficult. The method I recommend most is to take the mattress off of your current foundation and put it on the floor. The flat, firm surface of the floor can make a bed slightly firmer. You might also try a firm topper, but in my experience layering a firm topper over soft materials creates an odd feeling that I don't like. Still, some people have success with this method.

What about a mattress for heavier people? Great question. A heavier person is going to increase the stress they put on a mattress, so the best way to find a mattress that will last is to find one made with the highest quality materials. Again, this means high density foams and relatively high coil count units (depending on the coil system used). Let's take a look at a few examples:

Hey wait what about us skinny/light/small people?! I hear you. If you're very light or very thin, you're going to run into your own set of problems with beds. Namely, that medium or firm mattresses might feel firm to very firm, but plush mattresses designed for heavy people can feel "floaty" and lack support due to excessive comfort materials. I can commiserate. And while I can't tell you exactly what mattress will feel best to you, I can tell you that you'll probably want a softer coil (either an alternating coil system or a pocketed coil with a gauge around 15) with 3-5 inches of quality comfort material. High quality foams are still important here, although you'll probably get slightly more life out of low quality foams than a heavier person. Still, if you ignore quality entirely and buy a pillowtop pile of sink from Sealy you're probably gonna have a bad time. Too much foam won't allow you to contact the support layer correctly, and poor quality foam will soften in the middle resulting in... a hammock. No bueno.

Ooof, I've got upper back/shoulder pain... what should I do? This is usually a sign that you are side sleeping on a too firm mattress. Luckily for you, it's fairly easy to soften a bed. You can try a soft topper (update: I now recommend soft Serene Foam almost exclusively) and see if that helps. Although as I've said previously, sometimes toppers can have unanticipated effects on a mattress and you may need to play around with different toppers to get the right comfort and support. You could also try switching to a semiflex foundation (i.e. a wire grid). This will allow the slightest amount of "flex" (hence the name) between the wire grid and can soften the "hard end point" feeling on your shoulder. Finally, you can actually try placing another layer of foam underneath the mattress. If there's no base foam on your coil unit, then placing a layer of firm-ish foam underneath the mattress can also soften the mattress slightly by providing more transition between the springs and the ultimate unyielding surface in your foundation/ground/whatever.

Ooof, I meant I've got low back pain... what should I do? Ah okay. This is usually a sign that your mattress is too soft and is sinking underneath your hips. I discussed this in the "my mattress is bowing in the middle" section of the FAQ, but I'll give you quick recap here. You can try placing the mattress on a firm, flat surface (like the ground) to see if that helps. Beyond that, you might try a custom "zoning" of your mattress by placing 1/2" firm foam or a 1/4' cardboard shim underneath the middle third of the mattress. This will provide slightly more support to that area and accomplish a similar thing to the "belly bands" used for zoning by some manufacturers. If these don't work? You might be out of luck. There are other means of custom zoning (like placing foam rods within the spring section of a mattress), but I'm not experienced enough with this methods to make a serious recommendation here. You might just need a different mattress or a more supportive spring system.

Darn it, I just can't find a mattress that works! What should I do? If this is the case, then you might consider a modular mattress design. I think highly of this general approach, as it allows the user to open the cover and customize the mattress materials to find a configuration that works for them. This is commonly done with latex mattresses, but is growing more common with other materials as well. Below are a few examples that are built with high quality materials. Like with any recommendation, I have zero affiliation with these companies, but I've talked to them on the phone and think highly of their business and approach to mattresses.

How do I get the best price on a mattress? There's an art to this, but it generally comes down to comparison shopping. Ignore the name of the mattress and learn the specifics in terms of foam layers and mattress height. Then check online retailers for the same model and the same specs. If it's a big brand, then this will be the same mattress. I would add that using Google Shopping can sometimes reveal smaller stores that will carry a mattress at very very low prices, so that might be a useful place to search as well. Then approach your preferred retailer with an educated understanding of what the price of the mattress should be and ask if they will price match other stores. Most will do so. Still, I'd ask that you remember that brick and mortar stores have their own overhead to pay, so their prices may be slightly higher than an online retailer selling from a warehouse. I'll leave the ethics of purchasing locally vs purchasing on the internet to you.

And... I'm exhausted. That's a start at least. Let me know if you agree, disagree, or have data to back up specific points. I've been meaning to check a few foam suppliers websites for material sheets regarding durability and density, but likely won't have time for that today!
Edit: Added a few examples, cleaned up a few typos, and clarified a few points. And if you're interested in peaking at some material data sheets on various foams (as well as a seller's estimate of their lifespan and durability) take a look here: https://www.foambymail.com/poly-foam-sheet.html.
