Is this allowed at the casino for people who’ve attended. It been pretty hot in London recently and the dress code says smart casual but not sure if shorts are allowed. Planning to play the £30 satellite at 3 but don’t wanna be wearing jeans particularly.

Hi reddit. I just wanted to ask clarification on something that happened during the sunday afternoon tourny at aspers casino. Had a conversation with the dealer in which I thought he was wrong.
I'm going to leave out much detail because its not important to the question.. but UTG flats, I flat in the CO and small blind calls. The lady in the BB moves on all in. UTG has less chips and folds. Action is on me. I ask for a count. Just by looking it is clear that I have significantly less chips than the BB. I have my reasons for asking for the count. But the dealer refuses to count the chips. saying "she has you covered". I say that I understand this but explain about why I am asking for a count (i'll leave the reason out and chime in later about why) . He still refuses and this is becoming awkward for me. Others on the table understand why i'm asking for a count but no one helps explain. The dealer keeps saying "it doesn't matter, she has you covered" and "i've been doing this for a long time" etc. After a minute he sighs and counts her chips for me.
Was I wrong to keep badgering him for this count?

Will be in London and wondering if it's worth making the trip to check out Aspers. I'm concerned because it will be a Tuesday/Wednesday night. Thanks

This is about 9 months out of date but I wrote this to help consider my results and then couldn't decide where to post it. Having recently got myself a Reddit account, this seems the place.

A little history:
When I was 20 I considered dropping out of Uni and becoming a poker player. I had earned £18K profit across the previous year, and that is a lot of money for a student! Especially in the UK, where because poker is classed as a game of luck there is no tax on the winnings of gambling, it felt more like £25K. A significant “salary” for any 20 year old.
Then I started looking at the data behind that and realised that I was averaging almost 70 hours a week grinding 6 tables simultaneously at small stakes to make that profit. In fact my income per hour was just £5.37. Not awful, but hardly worth dropping out of Uni. Suddenly that profit didn’t feel so great anymore.
I tried moving up in stakes, from $20 buy-in’s to $50 buy-in’s, but in a month I lost £3K. The next level contained professionals, and the UK Government can pretend all it wants, but when you’re playing many thousands of hands, skill starts to overcome the short term coin-flips and variances. It was brutal. It was humbling. I wasn’t good enough, simply put, to do it full time and make decent money… so I decided to focus on graduating.
When I was 30 I decided I would try a bit more seriously again, but in casinos. I’d played in casinos sporadically over those 10 years (actually ended up in one with the woman who is now my wife, after I “accidently” missed my last train home when I saw her in a London pub), and although I felt I was a profitable and solid player, you need to be mindful not to kid yourself. So I approached things systematically, recording data for 12 months to see what stood out and lessons I could learn.

The results are in!
· I am indeed profitable. The data told me I had made a total of £8,279 in profit.
· I am fairly consistent, achieving a winning session 53 times from 77 visits, or 69%.
· I played 337.75 hours, meaning an hourly profit of £24.51, or annualised a take-home salary of £48K after tax, which is £68K before.
· I earned on average 14 “big blinds” an hour, a key metric for cash game players. At small stakes, anything over 5 is respectable, over 10 is great. I’ve heard it said 80% of small stake players are loss making, which seems a bit high to me, but I can easily imagine 60% are.
Better still, my graph has very few swings. Interestingly though, I only had 2 amazing nights where I won >£1500, which probably means I played slightly too safe. I confess I did seek to minimise variance where possible, feeling that I was better than 80% of the players I was against, so I didn’t need to take 50-55% marginally favourable coinflips.

Now because my sessions were of different lengths, it’s not immediately obvious if a £100 profit is good or bad. I mean if I’ve played 4 hours, it’s average, 2 hours, it’s fantastic, and 8 hours, pretty meh.
So I took another look and blended the sessions instead across number of hands played, producing the below graph, showing a level of consistency I am genuinely proud of. Roughly speaking, I make £1 per hand played.

OK Great, but what did I learn from this? Data is lovely and all (as is £8K!), but really you want insight from that data you can action to improve performance.

Wait, I did better at larger stakes?
Well firstly, there are a few things I found counter intuitive. Take the below, which shows the stakes I played at. In theory, you earn less the higher your stakes go as competition increases, but I didn’t see that at all.

Playing at stakes 50% higher (£3 an “orbit” versus £2 an orbit – more significant than it might sound), my hourly was a whopping 600% higher. Put another way, I played just over twice as much £1/£2 as I did £1/£1, but made 13x as much profit! Surprising indeed, and massively unexpected.
I am planning on playing some £1/£3 and £2/£5 once I grow my bankroll this year, it’ll be interesting to see if this trend continues, or if there’s something else going on not immediately obvious to me.

Day of the week – weekends are worse?!
Another unexpected development was found when looking at the days I was playing. I had expected that I’d be much better on Friday and Saturday when more amateurs would play and I’d be able to target them, but I found the opposite. Friday’s I made £2.47 an hour, Saturday’s £12.52, both way off my average, and across quite large sample sizes too (>55% of sessions between them).
Meanwhile Sunday, Tuesday and Wednesday all had ~10%+ of sessions, but saw hourly profit doubling my averages. My best hourly is Sunday, although I have never lost money on a Wednesday, so a close call as to which is my best.

After reflecting on these trends I started to realise something. Poker is essentially a game of knowledge and imperfect information. A key part of that is “position” (where you sit in each hand), where being later to act means you have access to more information, and “ranges” (what hands your opponents are likely to have), where depending on the position somebody plays a hand in and how they play it, you can start putting them on a range of cards. Nobody sane would bet with 7 players to act behind them with 2 7 off-suit, literally the worse starting hand, for example.
More experienced players play more predictably, and I was much better at sparring with them because I have a good grasp of the fundamentals. I think my fairly conservative playing style is also more suited to regular players, as I tend to take fewer risks and so don’t punish mistakes as harshly.
Finally, my risk adverse approach also fooled regular players into thinking I had weaker hands than I did, so I was able to mess with their attempts to put me on a range. Likewise I tended to just call, and rarely raise, any hand I wanted to play pre-flop, so I could disguise my hand and out-play after the flop. Again this isn’t traditional at all, but many of my bigger pots came about this way.

Central casinos have easier competition

Less surprising was my split in where I made the most money. Tellingly, Empire and Hippodrome are based in central London and are tourist destinations. I find the competitors objectively worse than I am, as a whole. The Vic and Aspers are less central, with the consensus being that Aspers was the toughest £1/£2 in London, consisting almost entirely of regulars and semi-pro’s. I mean, who wants to go to East London as a tourist? There’s way more glitz and glamour in Leicester Square and so much more appealing. The Vic is West London so less extreme, but a similar situation, it’s pretty out the way compared to central two.

Length of session
Lastly, something that was unknown to me was that I would see such an obvious split in hourly profit based on the amount of hours I was playing in that session:

Here, we see a jump in profit after 4 hours, and really between 4-8 hours is my sweet spot, running at 50% more than my average. I think after I have played at the same table for 4+ hours, that I am observant enough to spot certain patterns. One of my favourite tricks is to identify regulars targeting tourists, and re raise them. You know their range will be wide to target the less good player, so you take advantage of them trying to take advantage. This is especially good if you have a good position (so act after them), so that if they do call you can play the hand with more information.
The drop-off at the end likely indicates that after 8 hours I start making bad decisions. Reviewing this, not only am I probably a bit tired, but I think those sessions I am on “winners tilt”, and I must be winning or else I wouldn’t be there after 8 hours. But when you’re up and doing well, you tend to play hands you shouldn’t and make bad decisions that cost you, it can feel like there’s less cost in getting it wrong because you’re still in profit, even though it can cost more in terms of £s. Once I became aware of this in myself, I started seeing it in others. There’s a regular at the Hippodrome who is a dangerous and good player, but becomes reckless and likes a gamble when they are up. If he has lots of chips, I always try and sit at his table, and look to get it in when I am a 60-80% favourite, and hope my luck holds.

What’s next?
I’ve taken 2 months away from the casino’s to make sure I don’t have a problem and focus on a work project, and I’m looking forward to starting this year on the 29th November. I suppose starting on a Friday isn’t ideal, but it aligns nicely with my wife’s office Xmas party, so oh well! That said, I will make sure I play the £1/£2 at the Hippodrome for 4-8 hours. As it will be a Friday I’ll look to punish mistakes more aggressively and make fewer assumptions about the other players and their cards if they seem less experienced.
Let’s see if I can take the lessons learned across this year, and drive further improvements to make more money, improving on my operational performance, the real purpose of data in my opinion.

Rant incoming: Every major casino in London takes money out of MTT prizepools over and above what is described in the headline BI.
1) Empire Casino takes 5% out of the prizepool of their daily tournaments. For example, a daily £30+8 is really £28.50 + 9.50. They take the 5% out to run a league where someone wins a trip to the WSOP. You have basically no chance to win entry into the final unless you are a reg who plays a lot of volume.
2) Aspers take 15% out of their daily tournament prizepools to fund a freeroll every Sunday for people who have played in their tournaments each week. They claim there are no registration fees in their daily tournaments but if I play a comp with no registration fees but 15% of the prizepool disappears then this seems a bit suspect. This also makes it sound like the fee is lower than it is. A £100 tournament is really a £85+£15.
3) Hippodrome take 3% out of prizepools 'to cover staffing costs'. So a £400+40 is actually £388+52. This isn't given back to the players it is just kept. IDK if Hippo staff get extra for dealing tournaments or if they just get normal pay and the casino keeps the 3% (I'm guessing the second thing).
4) Vic takes 2% of prizepools from GUKPT events for a national league to reward people who play loads of their GUKPT events. Unless you travel the live circuit a lot its impossible to do well in this league, the guys who win are playing almost every event in the country. A £500+60 is actually a £490+70.
The casinos NEVER tell you about this, it is hidden deep in the terms and conditions and if you ask about it live the staff don't really want to tell you. I also strongly suspect that some of the money taken isn't redistributed to staff / for the promo, it is taken as an 'admin fee' of some kind. I play full time and am somewhat on the ball with regarding this sort of thing and even I took a while to find out all of this. I would guess there are tournaments running where <5% of the field is aware of the casino taking money out of the prize pool.
I have a few issues with this:
1) It is fundamentally dishonest to advertise a tournament as £400+40 if it is actually £388+52. If the receipt for the tournament says '£400 + £40' and less than £400 goes into the prizepool then this is just a lie. The casinos KNOW that people would balk at the rake being this high so they just hide it and know most people won't realise.
2) There is zero transparency for what happens to the missing funds. None of the accounting is disclosed so you have no clue where exactly the missing funds go. I think it is quite likely that there is an 'admin fee' that is taken for running the promotions, but obviously everything is secret so there is no way for us to know.
3) If nobody says anything about this I think the % 'withheld' will inevitably creep up and every casino will find a reason to take more. I recall someone telling me they played a £1K overseas w 8% withheld which is insanity. IMO if nobody says anything about it then in a few years every casino will take 10% out of the prizepool because why not.
4) Every time I consider playing a tournament I have to read the fine print to see what the hidden rake is. This is a massive pain in the ass, if I wanted to spend my time reading the terms and conditions I would have gone to law school.

As per the title im looking to take part in a small stakes live tourney this week, most likely Aspers in london as its close to home and cheap, although im willing to pay a little extra to hit up a different room if the games are a little softer.
Anyway to cut to the point, im looking for any advice you guys might be willing to give me before i head down there; is there anything i should/ shouldnt do, What can i expect? Whoch casino wouldyou recommend? I'm from London Uk. Would a weekend venture be better for a live play virgin or a weekday tourney? ( i have the week off) any tips with regards to play or etiquette would be much appreciated if anyone is willing to help me out, cheers and enjoy the rest of the weekend

Mini-Background: I play a ton of online poker at up to £100NL 6-max playing kinda semi professionally over the university summer break. Never played live before today.
So today I went to Aspers in Westfield Stratford shopping centre. Inside aspers it is pretty dingy, the poker room at the back so you have to walk past all the slots + the pit first (probably to try and waylay people I imagine). I sat down at £1/1 (only game running, which was then 6 handed) with £100 in chips.
I get dealt in immediately without posting a blind which confused me (I thought I would have to post), a player explained I could either call, raise or fold when the dealer looked at me. He asked if I had played before, I said I had never played live. I am not putting my blind in correctly and not realising the action is on me for the first orbit so my image is currently full retard.
Table is one old white guy, Ukrainian guy in 30s, 2 white guys 25-40 and 3 guys who I would guess are Turks or Arabs with London accents. People come and go for a bit.
Standard of play is lol. A few gems:
1) Old man limps utg, everyone limps, BB makes it 12, UTG makes it 40, folds to BB who calls. Flop A24r. BB checks, Old man shoves, BB calls and says 'if you have an ace you win'. Turn/river are bricks, old man shows A4o, BB mucks.
2) Folds to MP who raises to 3, BU makes it 5 total.
3) UTG limps, UTG+1 limps, MP limps and later shows down AKs.
4) 4 people limp to BB who makes it 3 total.
Actual hands I played:
1) I flat an open with 66 and fold to a cb when I miss the flop 4 handed.
2) After folding 100% of hands pre for 40 minutes I pick up AdKd UTG. I have £90 (paid the blinds lots) villains cover). We are 6/7 handed.
I make it £8, SB and BB call. Flop A67r. I bet £17 into £24, SB folds, BB calls. Turn 9 (possibly a flush draw I can't remember). BB donks for £17. I think for a bit and announce 'all in'. BB asks me how much that is, I say I don't know and the dealer counts that it is £65 total. When he asks for a count I am like 100% to have the best hand, but I am insanely nervous somehow. I just sit there and stare at the table. BB says 'you look nervous'. After like 20 seconds (it felt like about 10 minutes) he calls. 'I ask the dealer if I should turn my hand over but he misses this and just deals Qo river (no flush possible). BB says you win and throws his cards forward face down and I don't move or turn my hand over. I am wary of somehow screwing up and getting angled out of £180ish in the pot and waiting for the dealer to tell me what to do. BB says' turn your hand over' and I just sit there with my hand covering my cards. At this point there is a disagreement between BB and another player vs the dealer and another player as to if I have to showdown my hand to win the pot. BB: 'I have played loads of poker before, you have to show your hand...well this is a ridiculous rule'. Dealer pushes the pot towards me and says I can either show or not show. I say I am not showing unless I have to and muck. OMC says I have AK+ because I have not played a hand for 40 minutes and have to have it. BB Seems upset. He tells me he had 5 high and had some draws, but I don't tell him what I have. Did I do the right thing here? Can someone tell me what the etiquette is here?
2 minutes later Mr 5 high gets it in pre vs someone else for about £300 with AK vs AQ. Board comes out J733Q and Mr 5 high leaves in a huff.
That is it, I VPIPed 2 hands in like 70 minutes. I cashed out for £166 for £66 profit. I also got a free £5 slots voucher and put it on red to give me another £10.
Other things I noticed:
1) It was surprisingly hard to keep up with the action, I can play 4 tables of 6-max cash online happily but 1 table live 8 handed seemed really fast somehow. Nobody was tanking like in the WSOP.
2) Everyone there seemed like a dirty degen, some guys had been there since last night, this was at Noon on Monday.
3) Some guy ordered a pizza at the table and then ate it at the table wtf.
4) I went to take a piss before I sat down, there was a guy next to me tying his tie in the mirror. He said I was the first guy since he came in there to wash my hands after pissing. MFW As soon as I leave the casino I go into the next shop and wash my hands thoroughly.
5) Going to the cashier and cashing out my large handful of £5 chips felt baller as fuck even though it obviously wasn't.
6) Some people tipped and some didn't. Some guy tipped when he sat down. I didn't tip when I won the £180 pot (was too confused about the showing etiquette) but I gave the girl £3 when I stood up. Not sure if this is OK.
7) there were a ton of staff there, like 35+ people working there plus whoever was in the back which seemed a ridiculous amount considering there were not many people playing.
8) It felt somewhat seedy. It was much more like lock stock and 2 smoking barrels than Casino Royale.
9) I am not sure if I am just autistic or something, but the social aspect of poker seems like total BS. The sort of people who I want to talk to and the sort of people who are in the casino at 11AM on a Monday are two entirely separate groups. Also of the 10+ people who I played with zero were women. Slots and the pit were way more balanced but still like 2/3 men vs 1/3 women.
10) people are buying in and sitting / coming back with totally random stacks between £40 and £500 which is weird.
11) With the rake + tips I feel like we are all getting ravaged by the rake.
12) Live players suck.

I played for a living from 2002-2004, worked for PokerStars from 2004-2012, including one year off in 2008 playing for a living again, Ladbrokes for a year, and currently Unibet for a year.

Hey guys so any recommendation for playing poker in London? been playing a bit at aspers in Stratford but wouldn't mind exploring a bit more, £1,2 cash. or tourneys no more then £100 freezout, any recommendation for soft games or good casino was thinking of going to hyperdrome tomorrow and play some 1,2. Gonna have some free time in London today so I'm thinking of having a go at some live poker. I'd be willing to lose up to ~£200 max, where are the best/softest games? I'm not great so I'd like to have a chance to win! Is it better to play tournaments?
